I have fired a Sig 550-sp2. They are the ONLY 5.56 battle rifle I would have in my hands if the SHTF.
They are incredibly accurate from -40 degrees to + 125 degrees. We tested at 250 meters, first round "kills" with cold barrels, hot barrels, clean barrels, oiled barrels, dirty barrels.
Every time the first round shot went into a trap/skeet clay pigeon.

My bid held for 12 hours, which surprised me. The SIG collectors woke up this morning, spotted it, and now it is off to the races. Only a handful of these rifles were squeezed in ahead of the 1989 Bush ban. They are rare, and I don't use the word rare very often. If this sells for under $10K I will be shocked. 0 -

If Holland & Holland made an assault rifle, it would be a copy of that Sig.
If you were a gagzillionair and was allowed to own only one gun...order a Sig550.
If your life depended on a gun everyday, load up the mags for a Sig.

Hey LF! Does that have the grenade launcher ring and bayo lug? I believe they cut off the bayo lug and turned down the grenade launcher area so the ring wouldn't have a groove to fit in ... unless its very early!
I've got a 550 that was issued to the DEA, post 89 I think but it may have been post 94 ... it was sold to the guy that it was issued to, then he sold it to a friend of his ... then it came to me
I have to agree with babun ... the 550 is a gun I'd want in a SHTF situation ... but I'd also be okay with my police issued 551, which is 16" and a bit handier and maneuverable.
The scope is off my 550 but its only 4x which isn't much for my old eyes ... I've got a BT picitinny rail and for now a Leupold on 4-12x50 thats better suited to me ... when I get some "play money" I hope to get a proper European scope & mount but they are even more rare than the 550!0 -
This one has the bayonet lug on the bottom and there is a sling loop type thing on the side. I don't see where a grenade launcher would fit on there, but I could be missing something. I'm guessing the launcher would involve removing the gas adjustment knob and working off that. These areas are in pic 14 and 44 in the auction. It pretty much looks exactly like yours except with a bayonet lug on the bottom.

These were the "problem" guns, that did not work well.

Kimberkid you have once again caused me to experience gun envy in regards to your ownership and stewardship of the above referenced gem...
It still is and for a long time been on my win the lottery must have dream gun list especially with the complete matching support kit...
Unfortunately and with much humility my go to - ready to roll three line main infantry battle rifle is quite dated in comparison (my transit chest is built out of wood / my optics in contrast appear crude)
I make do in a pinch with my SAFN-49 Argentine naval issue sniper rifle with transit chest chambered in 7X57mm Mauser with full ensemble for the British No.32 Mk1 telescope.
While the Argentine naval infantry FN49 is not often encountered - and the sniper variant with the British SMLE Mk 1 "t" optics and accessories and transit chest (original and matching # and complete) can be considered rare - I personally think the Luxemburg sniper variant has better glass and a superior arsenal "tune"and a preferable top of the receiver crest of origin...
While certainly a patent design and architecture progenitor it is perhaps dated and a tad crude in direct comparison.
But I like it and it fits me and it's what I have available / it gets the job done. Keep me supplied with 139 or 140 grain projectiles and I will ring steel plates all day long and twice on Sunday's...
I also suspect that your piece with accoutrements commands more value...

Locust Fork! I'm watching this auction with great interest! FYI the gernade ring (should be, pictures 14, 45 &46) is located where the barrel widens with that little flat spot which is is flat because it's been turned down to eliminate the groove the ring fits in ... And I would feel truly blessed to have an SAFN-49 and acutruments such as yours, but like yours, mine is not unfired so I don't have to feel guilty when we go to the range and ring steel at 300 (which is our max distance) ... The FN49... An irate customer came to the gunshop and opens the soft rifle case he is carrying and hands me the gun. He tells me he is unhappy with the gun that he had purchased from SARCO a few weeks before...
He is a regular and the county coroner and he buy lots of toys. He says that SARCO had a special sale for select customers on a large lot of guns purchased from estates and that there may be hidden gems and rare finds...
He sees several guns he wants including the FN sniper rifle which he has never seen before so he buys 6 handguns and 3 long guns including the FN49...
He relates that he feels he was cheated - that he looked through his gun books and while there are FN49 rifles with scopes (Luxembourg and Belgium) they all appear to have German optics and hi think that his gun is the result of somebody putting a reproduction British SMLE sniper scope and mount onto the FN. He points out that SARCO sells the reproduction scope and mount and he believes that the gun was altered to deceive and then placed in amongst ("salted") the estate sale guns as part of the scam...
He goes out to his car and brings in the transit chest which resembles somewhat the British pattern and it has all the assorted associated ancillary articles and support items...
He had correctly removed the quick release / hold zero mounts and base items and the scope placing them in their leather transit field cases and placed the cases in their correct slots and cubbies within the chest.
He left the gun with me me to inspect and to place on consignment - after I examine it and come up with a value estimate.
He was then upset with me and with SARCO because SARCO would not take it back (special estate events have an all sales are final disclaimer) and they say it's authentic. After examination and research I offer the opinion that it's authentic and it is as the auction catalog described...
In his eyes and in his words he thinks that because I do a ton of business with SARCO (me a buyer and they a distributor) that we might be in cahoots or that I might white wash things in order to stay in their good graces.

Sorry - had to take a pet care break as the hedgehog is quilling and he not only gets grumpy but when trying to scratch the proverbial itch he can hurt himself if not monitored...
That turned into spending a bit of time checking on all the pets.
So...
I gave him $500.00 of my own cash and and let him have in trade a matte grey green phosphate coated colonial edition MAS Model 49/56 semiautomatic rifle with integral grenade launching appointments and sights...
A few month later we were doing a gun show (we were selling mostly old oddball obsolete military spec ammo) I had 6 pistols under glass on display to attract attention - guns that chambered ammo that we conversely we bad for sale like 9mm glisenti and 8mm nambu and .30 Mauser and .455 webley and .35 acp...
Lucky for me the table to my left held a French military firearm collector and an author selling and signing his book "Honor Bound" and another I think was "Proud Promise". We talked all weekend and I ate dinner and sat at a table in the bar with him Saturday night.
He taught me quite a bit about French rifles and pistols and I bought both books (signed). I had told him about the FN49 mystery gun I had acquired and we exchanged email addys. Turned out he was writing a book with an older author who had coauthored 2 books with Ian Hogg and we started a 3 way email chain.
They taught me about the FN49 and it's variants and the 3rd gent had reference books with details on most of not all of the variants. He confirmed that the Argentine navy had British "t" sniper scopes installed on some of their FN49's - and that the naval armourers themselves installed surplus but new in box German ZF-41 diminutive long eye relief forward mounted scout style scopes on other select FN49 rifles.
I later picked up 3 different reference books that listed my rifle and it's specs within their pages.
I think that both optic selections are a wee bit odd and don't seem especially balanced or correct when mounted on the rifle. Especially after you see the Luxembourg sniper variant of the FN49. the sniper rifle gurus opine that the Argentine's did upgrade a handful of the rifles with modern optics and return to zero quick detach mounts for trial purposes - but instead of upgrading or altering any of the FN's they purchased a variety of sniping platforms in .308 and later .300 win Mag - with some Romanian draganov pattern sniper rifles in 8mm Mauser and .30-06 which seems also to be something of an anomalous choice...
So I have a correct intact complete SAFN model 49 Argentine naval infantry sniper rifle in transit chest with all numbers matching accessories and accoutrements including the as delivered contract spec'd scope in roughly 90% condition on the rifle and glass - a bunch of external scratch and dent wear and markings on the transit chest - including the rope handles that deteriorated and came apart.
I later added a SARCO reproduction German pattern ZF-41 sniper scope and field transport can with padding and leather web gear intact.
I have put roughly 600 rounds of 7X57mm Mauser through it. It favors the 139 grain and 140 grain bullets from Remington and absolutely loves the Norma Oryx lightweight projectile hunting ammo in the simulated wood ammo box.
I think I did okay - I have no earthly idea what it's value is - and I do shoot it and take it out on range days...
I to kind of fell into this gun - Providence and luck shined upon me - I have grown to love the gun...
And people thought I was crazy to buy it and also thought I overpaid for it...
I am told that the last time these variants were used in combat before being retired from service was during the Falklands conflict in the Maldives against British paras...
I still don't know all the details and specs and historic data / details on the gun - my spec sheet is rather sparse.
And while I love the gun I think the above referenced aforementioned and link listed rifle probably does the job better and may have a higher insurance value...
Locust fork again has offered another unicorn gun - a white whale piece made from unobtanium and sprinkled with magic fairy dust - an amazing rifle and amazing seller...
And I can't think of better experts to school us on the history and value and core historic data on the gun than Kimberkid and Mark Christian...

$13,600 is not a bad price. I noticed that the buyer appears to be a dealer. He either wants it for himself, which is a bad habit that most of us dealers have, or he already knows where he can sell it for more money. I'm betting it is the latter. 0 -
I was guessing $15,000......but that is just because I saw the inferior ones priced a bit over $12,000. The owner of the item is happy.
