What do you folks think of this M1 Carbine?

Have been looking for a 50AE rifle, lever action was preferred, and ran across this converted M1 Carbine.
Price is pretty steep, but then there are probably not a heck of a lot of them out there.

Don I just picked up 18 nasty guns I need to clean and get listed, including 3 M1 carbines, so I don't have time to research but I seem to remember there being problems with these guns and excessive pressure. I could be wrong but you might want to take a look first. Good luck, Ricci. 0 -

I like it. The stock is nice in my opinion. (Have not researched any, on the .50AE conversion to this firearm though.)
I do not like it $5500 worth, though.
$100 delivery? As stated before, is he going to show up at my door and hand it to me?
That may be a hard Sell. I see a re-list with a lower BIN, in the future. (JMHO.)

I'd expect a one-of-a-kind gun to be listed as a "penny auction". Starting it at a high price makes me think the seller has an unrealistic impression of its value.
Keep in mind, the M1 carbine receiver was designed to fire a cartridge producing pressure & muzzle velocity similar to those of the .357 mag. I'd listen to Ricci.

It is unique, but at five grand it would have to be a lot more than just an oddity. I'm unclear why there is an issue with the $100 shipping charge. A $5500 firearm will easily cost that much or more to insure. Want to save money and waive insurance? You are obviously trust UPS/FedEx/USPS a lot more than I do. 0 -
When DCM loaned us 10 of these back in the 60's for our club program. Most of them failed and were sent back for problems with the back of the recievers blowing out. I would pass on anything this expensive especially with such a premium on delivery.
When the DCM offerd these M1 carbines and regular M1 Garands for purchase after the Clinton era profit center changes. No one in our club bought any of the carbines. They were returned. All the Garands were bought for really good prices from uncle.0 -
I have had the opportunity to put a few hundred rounds through one chambered in the wildcat bottlenecked 5.7 Johnson / 5.7 spitfire cartridge...
Also I had a customer who was attempting to convert one to fire .38 special wadcutters as a companion piece to his S&W model 59 semiautomatic target pistol.
Always though the bottle necked 7.62 cartridge used in the CZ52 semiautomatic pistol would have been nice...

As others have mentioned my first thought was if the receiver is strong enough to handle that round. My Hornandy reloading book put the rim of the .50AE at .515 and the O.D. of my Carbine's bolt face is .549. The receiver is also too narrow towards the rear. So it appears the had to make a bigger bolt and machine away some of the receiver just to make it fit.
That being said, the .30 carbine has a higher maximum chamber pressure than the 50AE.
I personally think it is neat and safe, but not worth $5,500.0 -
I don't have an opinion on the gun itself, but I seem to remember looking for.50 Alaskan stuff and aside from 1 model of custom lever action, the only other option was converted M1's. so a converted M1 in .50AE doesn't surprise me.
not too thrilled about either because one is too expensive and the other is expensive and goofy.0 -

At one point you could get them chambered in .45 Win Mag as well. Tim LeGendre also invented the .450 Bushmaster, under the original name of .45 Professional. I recall reading an article years ago that he was working on converting M14/M1As to .338 Win Mag. Interesting concepts, no matter how you look at them. Reminds me of McCann's Garand conversion to .458 Win Mag. 8-)
