Recommended Tomato Plants in Large Containers -

I typically grow 30-40 or so (+/-) in very large containers. 15- 25 gallon pot size. High grade Miracle Gro soil, blended with bagged Top Soil, Manure, etc. Very good growing element.

I usually go with Roma's, Early Girls, Better Boys, Beefsteak, etc.

What are your favorites in containers? (if you go that route.)

Ready to put them in the ground. (Just cleaned the pots out, turned the soil over, ready to go.)

Looking for input.

    My uncle used to poke four holes in a bag of potting soil and plant a tomato plant in each one and he grew great tomatoes but he died and he doesn?t do it anymore.

    My favorite full size fruit tomato for container growing is "Celebrity". Because it is a determinate type, and does pretty well in a large pot (5 gal. or larger)

    We do some container gardening on our back deck (we have too many deer to put tomatoes out in the garden)

    Ours are about 2 feet tall, and are in bloom (lotsa sun in their location). We plant Black Krim (heirloom) Early Girl, and an heirloom beefsteak. The heirlooms are indeterminate, but I have 6 ft stakes for them. Be sure to give container plants some calcium, or you will get a bad case of blossom end rot.

    Cherry tomatoes can be a hoot in containers- we grew one that made it to about 12 ft- grew up the stake, and along a 2x6 handrail. It's spot on the deck was almost frost free- thought it might make it to spring, but a December snow got it. Blooming and bearing up to the day it froze.

    When I was planting in containers I liked and had good luck with:

    Celebrity
    Tumbling tom does great in a Topsy Turvy pot
    Bush Goliath Tomato
    Big Boy Bush Tomato
    Sweet 100 Tomato
    Green Zebra

    The only problem will be finding some of these types.

    Just came home with an initial load of plants. 16 Tomato, (4 each) Early Girl, Better Boy, Cherokee Purple ,
    (based on advice here.) I believe the other is Sweet 100, (a cherry tomato variety.)

    3 different Peppers. (4 of each.) Chili Pie, Giant Maribell and Red Knight.

    Wlil be out putting them in the pots here shortly. Supposed to rain for the next 3-4 days.






    Just finished getting all the plants in Pots/ground. It will be good it will rain on them the next 3-4 days.

    Need to pick up some more Tomato plants. (Suggestions welcome.)

    (based on advice here.) I believe the other is Sweet 100, (a cherry tomato variety.) And Ch P. (?) [Something Pink. Write up was good, decided to try it. ] Drawing a blank on it now.

    3 different Peppers. (4 of each.) Chili Pie, Giant Mar (marlin?) and Red Knight.

    I would not be surprised.

    I have been screwed here, in that regards, last couple years in a row.

    Somewhat expecting it, since I have now planted.

    As in years past, place upside down containers on my veggies. Hope for the best.

    A few times. Works fine for cherry and plum sized tomatoes.

    Any here, use mulch or the like, around your potted vegetables to hold in the moisture?

    I am leaning towards going in that direction.

    I hate having to water wilted Vegetables every day in the full heat of Summer. (A downside to container growing.)

    Thoughts?

    hollow plastic spike that screws onto a water bottle. Stick in the soil, waters as soil get dry.

    I've seen them/know what you are talking about. I helped to oversee a large Nursery about 6 years ago. Had irrigated drip lines. You had to check every line/pot as the timer rotated lines/greenhouses. Lines would get clogged with algae/etc. and have to be individually removed cleaned to allow water to flow.

    I finally talked the owner in to introducing a treatment to the water lines to reduce/remove the algae buildup.

    I would like to have that set up.


    Planting in containers is challenging, in that if it does not rain/is ridiculously hot, you have to take daily action, or you will lose your plants.


    I attempted to stop of at "The Garden Store, " on the way home. Swinging by at 3:19 pm. Apparently they close at 3:00pm right now on Saturdays, as they were letting people out, but no one else in.

    I wanted to grab about another 12-16 Tomato plants, different varieties.

    Last nights/todays steady rain is making my new transplants look very good. I've been checking them out since I got home. The steady rain forecasted this weekend would have helped seat them.

    I will make note of the added Calcium comment. (I will be adding some granulated fertilizer in the near future.) Cages forthcoming.

    Leaning towards "Celebrity, " based on a recommendation here, Beefsteak, and a yet to be un-named runner. Plan on picking up another 12-16, (3/4 different variety) on the way home Monday.

    As suggested before, input welcomed/solicited.
