It sucks it has to stay plugged into the wall like that. 0 -
30 grand is kind of steep.
But I guess some folks wanted one.0 -
If that's the first Helliphant, it was given to Mark Worman of Graveyard Cars at the last SEMA show. He's going to put it in a 1958 Plymouth for the next SEMA show. It's supposed to mimic Christine from the movie. But with much more attitude. 0 -
l still love CHRISTINE. Great movie.. l learned to drive on a 58 Plymouth SAVOY.. 4 door, three on the tree, flathead inline six motor... l think MOPAR cars were the first cars with Ball Joints. l remember that Plymouth went away very QUICKLY as a kid after one of those joints let loose on the passenger side while MAMA was driving... Grandma and l were in the car too

Lincoln came out with ball joints first in 1952.
Also Mopar didn't invent the hemispherical engine either. It has been in use since 1901 by several different manufacturers. And Ford was the first one to use it in a V8. Mopar just trademarked the name "Hemi"0 -
No one is certain how many engines Mopar sold. Allpar wrote, "Industry insiders believe Mopar may be making around 100," but reiterated that it's a guess. 0 -
And only thirty grand ............ damn, I always miss the bargains .............................. 0 -

I leaned how to drive out in the fields around my old home place back in the early 60s in a '49 Dodge pick-up truck with the fluid drive and 3 on the column and I also drove around the fields in my grandpa's early 50s Ford pick-up truck.
The fluid drive Dodge would allow you to set still with the motor running in gear without the clutch engaged. One thing you had to be careful of was parking it and thinking that leaving it in gear would keep it from rolling. You had to use the emergency brake or curb it to keep it from rolling off.
One of the funniest sights I saw as a youngster was my dad chasing that old Dodge truck across the field where it had rolled off from our house and was headed for the Holston river. He caught it at the top of a rise where it had slowed enough for him to catch up and get in to stop it before it hit the river. My Mom and I were almost rolling on the ground laughing but we didn't let dad see us because he wouldn't have seen the humor in it right at that time.

When did Ford come out with a Hemi engine?
I just found this... "Zora Arkus-Duntov, who designed a HEMI head conversion for the Ford flathead V-8, is often credited for inventing the HEMI, but the Welch brothers pioneered the engine at least 30 years before his involvement."
They were for a Ford, but not made by Ford.
Chrysler came out with the Hemi in 1951.0 -
Interesting.."Zora Arkus-Duntov even though not around any longer..will be happy soon with GM's introduction of the mid engine Corvette. He tried for years to get them to do it. 0 -

I had a 1958 two door Savoy with the Golden Commando DeSoto engine. Eleven to one compression, dual ignition, pushbutton transmission, it would go. 104 octane Ethyl gas. It was 350 cubic inch and rated 305 H.P. Nothing compared to now, but a lot of fun back in the day.0 -

That HP was at the wheels though, not the crank, right?
My 5.0 (F150) is 360 HP.....but when you figure in the drivetrain losses, it is only about 315HP.0 -
IMO, 30k for a factory crate is reasonable. I mean if you are going to do everything this had done to it from an "professional", I am quite certain we are in the ballpark. If time was on my side I would really like one of those, but 0 -
back in the 60's when my dad and his friend were into stock car racing, some other guy at the track bought the first Hemi crate engine in the midwest and stuck it in his stock car. blew it up. they said he was crying.
wish they had youtube back then!0 -

Cars sure had character back then eh? I had a 58 Plymouth Suburban Wagon. I bought it with a bad engine and transplanted a 440 into it. To heavy to really move, but a great classic.
Wonder if that crate engine would fit in my Omni? That could be fun.0 -
Dad bought a new 57 Plymouth Suburban wagon back in the day. As a kid, it was fun to climb over the back seat and ride back there. I still remember I was the first one to see a flashing big red bubble gum light on the cop car behind us. When I told Dad, he just laughed until he looked in the mirror.
The amazing thing about the ticket Dad got was that he was able to pay the cop on the spot.

I didn't know that wasn't standard procedure back then. :?
BTW, his was a flathead six with the Chrysler push button 2-speed transmission (Power
flyte ?).0 -
I bought a "58 Savoy in 1960, 350 cid, stick shift. Fun car to drive as it was fairly light & handled well. 11" clutch was a knee-shaker.
The Ardun heads designed in 1947 by Arkus-Duntov for the Ford flathead were an after-market item, Ford wasn't involved. I occasionally see street rods equipped with them at the Back to the 50's car show here in MN.0
