Modern sporting rifle
Please educate me a bit . To build an ar style pistol do you need a special upper / lower marked pistol only or will the common multi cal marked lower work ? How do you configure it so the pistol magazines fit.I am aware there are adapters to change the mag well dimensions but are there other methods?All help greatly appreciated

Yes, a common lower will work. It does not even need to be marked "multi". You just need to purchase a stripped lower, or a completed lower. As long as it comes from the factory as an incomplete firearm, it is not sold as a long gun or as a handgun. It is sold as an "other". Of course you can buy completed AR pistols too.
My AR pistol uses the same magazines as my carbine, so no adapting needed. I do use 20 rounders in the pistol though, to make it more manageable.0 -
There are some jurisdictions which require the lower to be specially sold as a pistol, these are areas where handguns are registered at point of sale. One thing that is mandatory is that the receiver was not sold as a rifle, so that means you can't take a 9mm carbine, put a pistol "brace" on it and then pin on a 10" upper. You cannot turn a rifle into a pistol. Doing so creates a Firearm Made from A Rifle, which is subject to the national Firearms Act. Most builds start out with a stripped receiver and proceed from there. If the magazine well of your host receiver is sized too large for standard pistol caliber magazines (IE .223) then you will need to use some form of magazine adaptor which will also incorporate a new ejector. There are several on the market which are sized for Colt 9mm magazines, Glock magazines and some other magazines. The general opinion on conversion adaptors is that the Colt magazines feed better (they insert and feed straight) while the Glock Magazines, which feed at an angle, may have issues. The advantage to the adaptor is that you can remove it and return to firing .223. On the other hand, there are often function issues which need to be fine tuned. My advice is to simply buy a dedicated 9mm lower and do the build on that. If you get a lower specifically made for Glock magazines the feeding issues with the adaptors disappear. 0 -

I very much like my Kel-Tec PLR-16. (5.56) Pistol. Piston driven, no buffer as the SS recoil spring is wrapped around the piston. (Ingenious/inovative - what Kel-Tec is known for.)
Forward Hand guard, muzzle brake, single point sling. Meprolight MP-20 Holographic sight. Tension the single point sling out, (cross shoulder) handles/sights like a SBR. Rides in my Jeep, in a lock box. Very small black ballistics fabric carry bag. Carries like a backpack, (dual shoulder straps,)or across one shoulder (sling) or small rounded hand carry. 4 30 rounders, a 20 rounder, and the stock 10 rounder.
I've not seen, handled, or shot, a small 5.56 Pistol as much as I like this set up. Highly recommend.0
