yep that's ridiculous.
generally the cost of medical stuff is so high because of
a) throughly R&D products
b) lots and lots of red tape
c) completely stupid, slow, lazy and inefficient liberal yuppie "entitled" ding dongs doing the research and still getting paid 5 times as much as say, a roofer that works 20 times as hard. if you put one of those twerps on a lawn crew they would be crying within an hour, try to walk off the job by lunchtime, and if you chain them to the lawnmower would be dead within a week.
d) hospitals have to recover costs of treating lots of people who never pay their bill
you aren't getting the inhaler for $1600, you are getting the drug for 1600$. it's a rule of thumb that to develop a drug takes 5 years and costs $500,000 (20 years ago, probably $750,000 now) and is good for 10 years at most before it goes generic and they can't make any money off of it. obviously $1600 for 14 days worth of a drug is not normal, but they must have their reasons. doesn't sell much? niche item? expensive components in the drug like osmoline nitroacetaldehyde or something? ask your doctor for a cheaper option
in talking with people from other countries, yes health care costs much less, and everything else does too like housing and food. but you don't make money either. they observed how you make a lot more money here, and you spend a lot more money here. it's simply how the economy works.0 -
There is one more you missed. That is the HUGE cost for doctors and medical facilities to cover their ass with INSURANCE. If it were not for the litigation lawyers getting huge unrealistic settlements for the trivialest of reasons, costs would be markedly lower. IMHO. 0 -
The problem is a lot more complicated.
First, the drug companies generally spend more money for advertising than research.
Second, there is a complicated arrangement in this country that allows everyone to get a "taste": drug companies, pharmacy benefits managers, health insurance companies, distributors, pharmacy chains, & Members of Congress. We pay more for drugs than any other country in the world.
In 2004 there was a proposal to require drug companies to give Medicare recipients the same group discount that the VA gets; our Members of Congress voted against it. (All got substantial campaign contributions.)
Drug patents in the US are good for 20 years (if granted > 1995). But, if just 1 molecule of the drug is changed, they get another 20 years, even if that changes does not improve the drug. That's why insulin is so expensive now.
State pharmacy boards make it even worse. In Maryland, it is illegal for a pharmacist to tell a customer that he can sell him a drug for less money if he says he has no insurance than he would pay with his insurance card. Any drug with an expiration date > 1 year must be relabeled to indicate that it expires in 1 year.

WTF is right. There is a huge problem with big pharma. Maybe when the fools in congress quit playing politics and taking bribes from the pharma companies something will be done.

I posted in another thread about being prescribed Humira. The sales of Humira in 2017 were about 18.5 BILLION dollars! I have a hard time believing that they haven't recouped their development costs yet. At that volume of sales what they spend on advertising is a drop in the bucket. This drug has been prescribed for 10+ years. In India they have developed a virtual clone of this drug at about 1/5 the price that doesn't appear to infringe on the patent. Why isn't that drug available here? On the plus side I have finished my initial treatment and the results have been surprisingly good. I start my regular weekly shots tomorrow and hope the progress continues. Once again I realize I am fortunate that insurance covers most of the cost. At $2500 a week that would eat up my retirement fast. Bob 0 -

There was and is no toll on the Brooklyn bridge.
