Feeding 4,400 people salmon
Every year a small town about a 20-minute Drive south of me has a salmon supper / picnic that 4400-plus people attend. People are usually lined up for about three city blocks for it, but the line is surprisingly quick. They're not chintzy with the salmon, they give you a pound of it plus all the fixings., and the salmon is flown in the day of, fresh. It is cooked to Perfection and tastes superb... even my daughter who hates fish loves it.
Can you imagine 20 people cooking 4400 plus lbs of salmon plus the fixing over an open fire in the middle of August Where the average temperature of is 90+ degrees?
The day before the supper they bring in tons of dirt to lay out on the asphalt so they don't burn it when they start the fire to cook the salmon, corn and baked potato. They cook it over an apple wood fire.
The price last year was $14 a plate, which is not a bad price when you consider what you get and it's for a good cause. The money is raised for the Parks department in the city. I usually order two plates for myself, but can only eat half of 1 plate there so much food on it. I take the balance home and make sandwiches out of it. There's nothing like a fresh salmon cream cheese bagel sandwich...
Anyway I can't wait until August for them to have their next salmon supper / picnic. They have live entertainment and every year I get to meet new people. People come from all over the state and as far away as Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona and even Colorado for it

WOW, that really made me hungry. Wish I was a LOT closer.

Wish I could GO EAT a pound of Salmon with all the fix'ns and probably a beverage and then have "them" clean up after the meal. $14.00 would buy 2 hamburgers, fries and a drink at a fast food joint.
Lunch just cost me $15.00 for a Chicken Salad Taco with iced tea for lunch, included a $2.00 tip for a completely unmemorable meal.

Farm-raised Atlantic
I have run into a number of salmon snobs who raise their noses, but Costco has frozen farm-raised Atlantic salmon fillets that when grilled with a bit of olive oil and lemon are as good as the fresh Copper River, or King that sells for $ 15.00+ a pound.
Sounds like a great event.0 -
I've had some good farm raised Atlantic, but if given a choice, even at twice the price, I'll take the Copper River sockeye every time!! Woo doggy, dat's some good fish!!Don McManus wrote:remingtonoaks wrote:NeoBlackdog wrote:What type of salmon are they serving? Chinook? Silver? Atlantic? Sockeye?
