Mexican troops questioned two U.S. soldiers along the two countries' border earlier this month. The American soldiers were on the U.S. side of the border conducting a routine surveillance operation, defense officials say.
Military officials from the U.S. Northern Command said that "five to six Mexican military personnel questioned two U.S. Army soldiers who were conducting border support operations."
The soldiers were in an unmarked Customs and Border Protection vehicle near the southwest border in the vicinity of Clint, Texas.
Officials confirmed that the Mexican troops were armed with what seemed to be assault riffles. They drew their weapons when they saw the two U.S. soldiers and ordered the U.S. troops to return their weapons to a military vehicle. According to officials, the two Americans obliged "in an attempt to de-escalate a potential volatile situation."
"Throughout the incident, the U.S. soldiers followed all established procedures and protocols," Northern Command said in a statement.
While the two U.S. troops were on the south side of the security perimeter, officials say that they were still north of the Rio Grande and thus were firmly inside American territory. After the incident, military and Department of Homeland Security officials sent an inquiry to the Mexican government demanding an explanation.
"An inquiry by CBP and DOD revealed that the Mexican military members believed that the US Army soldiers were south of the border," said Northern Command, referring to Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Defense.
"Though they were south of the border fence, U.S. soldiers remained in U.S. territory, north of the actual border," the statement said, adding that "after a brief discussion between the soldiers from the two nations, the Mexican military members departed the area."

Since our soldiers were out numberd the stand down was the smart move. Sounds like a good reason to move some military to reinforce and secure out boarder untill a understanding of this incident is reached.

I bet if the United States put a strangle hold on money transported or transmitted into Mexico - stopped or even put a dent in the money that illegal immigrants send home to Mexico - started seizing or blocking or taxing / tarrifing that revenue stream we might be able to focus the Mexican government's attention on what border issues are important to the United States...
Use the funds to build and maintain an interlocking system of barriers are including physical and elint / humint methods - an in depth multi layered up grad able flexible modular system including border patrol and a rotation of guard / reserve units and drones / tethered rigid or semi rigid air ship platforms...
Basic barbed wire and concertina coils and chain link and telephone pole / rail tie defenses along with dragons teeth and shielded led floodlights along with periodic monitoring stations and forts and lagers and barracks in depth...
We could gain some traction and make some progress - hit them in the wallet.
Just some random thoughts and speculation that seems not so complicated.

Congress will need to rewrite the immigration laws and enforcement policies. Just look at this mess and tell yourself different. The wall is only a "stop gap".
Next any "invader" sticking his leg through the wall and touches U.S. soil will be allowed asylum. The law reads anyone stepping foot on U.S. soil shall be granted asylum and didn't say anything about touching both feet. :shock:

Serving active duty US military troops in uniform patrolling a contentious and contested international border that has become a wide open super highway for drug trafficking by narco terrorists and human trafficking by cartel connected criminal coyotes who rape and rob and extort those they smuggle - forcing them to be mules and transport drugs on the trip across the border - nearly unchecked waves of illegal immigrants flooding into the country - areas / zones that are a hot bed of international criminal activity that includes armed professional criminals...
And the troops are not issued live ammo - not kept in the vehicle - not overseen by a non com or warrant...

Mexican military and law enforcement are notoriously corrupt, and were likely causing a diversion so one of the narco cartels could make a drug run across the border. Those American soldiers likely came to close to interfering in a crossing. 0 -

I think one talking head on the news hit the nail on the head, it was a diversion.
I guarded the old East German border on and off for seven years. All sorts of stuff going on. Spensatz on our side, Bundes Grenzschutz (GSG9) skulking around, U.S. forces and smugglers. After a fresh snow the amount of foot traffic you could see by the footprints was a real eye-opener. Double fences, minefields, roving patrols and guard towers, slowed them down but didn't stop them.0
