This type of half-asses enviro-reporting is why I stopped subscribing Scientific American.
The levees are sinking, but we need to share the blame with the virtually immeasurable increase in sea level.
Of course the Corps would say this, but there a responsible report would point out the relative differences. Measurable sinking of levees and immeasurable raising of sea levels will cause these to be ineffective 6 years after completion. SI never misses a chance to blame something on global climate change.
It seems that most data suggest a 1/8" increase in sea levels per year over the past decade. This is approximately .026" faster than the average level increase over the past 100 years. Apparently, the Army corp did not plan on that additional .026" over the 6 years, and the resultant .159" (just over 1/8") total increase has jeopardized the levies in the Big Easy.
Sounds like a bit of a cop-out to me, but maybe their design was just that precise. Had sea level increases held to the 100 year average, in would be a problem in 2024 instead of 2023.0 -

Just like Calf. and the mud slides. Most have beamers in the drive ways and then EXPECT free $$$ to repair from disasters. Shouldn't have been allowed to build in those areas in the first place. If private ins. companies won't insure or if they don't buy private ins. it should be their baby. OK-Maybe the first go around the gov't helps out BUT with the understanding that this is as 1 time freebie, next time they pay :x 0 -
Just like we've got generations on welfare, we've also got generations that live in newly / constantly rebuilt homes... They know that they're in the zone but know that Uncle Sam is going to rebuild for them. Our tax dollars down the tubes... 0 -
one of the best examples of this was years ago seeing a big color pic of a new subdivision built right at the base of a TALL earthen dam ???????????..but hell i guess i takes my chances here on the prairie with tornadoes ??? 0
