It would depend on what state you are in.

A creative CPA or tax forum in your home state would be your best best.

Generally it would be the percentage rate applied against your earnings in your state vs your fed status.

What is "tax liability" payment in relevance to state income tax??

And how can it be that the payment required by the said state is more than I earned in the first 9 days of January that I still lived/worked there?? :?: :o

    Please advise...

I live in a state without any state income tax!

No accountant but lets just figure that even if a state with say a 15% income tax on Federal AGI you would only owe 15% of that 9 days of income, as the Chinese couple said when the baby was born Sum ting wong.

There's at least one CPA on this forum, but I imagine he was pretty busy yesterday.

I slept in the dumpster behind H &R Block once, so

it's possible, but not correct. States are only permitted to prorate your taxes based on your days of residency during the tax year.

Yep, and there are special forms for each state to allocate what is owed to whom from when. I forget what they are called, part time resident something something. Can be a real pita for travellin workers.

My advise for OP is get a good tax preparer. You can amend the return if you already sent it in wrong.
