visiting squirrel

a few days back I got caught off guard there was a squirrel by the pole barn ( and a cat about 6 feet away ) only 2nd one I have seen here in 25 years nearest woods about a mile away . it was a grown gray did not seemed concern . about the cat(s)
later I saw it closer to the house around one of the pine trees that time with about 6 cats around it .
it looked like 1st time it had see any cat and the first time the cats had seen a squirrel . I watched as they were touching noses and run bit then stop and start all over again more curious then the normal cat mouse games . I think the cats were trying to decide if they could try and eat or just write it off as another animal on the place they do not bother the rabbit ducks chickens and so on .
I wet out close it ran up a tree and was jumping into the next in the top branches .
not sure if moved on or the cats had a special dinner did not find any left over's any where so I think it moved on

    just don't let him get into the attic or soffit of the house.

    I enjoy watching them jump through the trees, they can really move and are born acrobats. Squirrels are rare around here. some usually show up when my Walnuts are ripe. Mostly Red Squirrels.

    The dog and the ferret do a good job holding off the Zulu horde of squirrels for the most part...

    A brace of pellet rifles are the equivalent of having artillery support on tap when needed and the effect is more precise than letting the predatory pets rip around the yard...

    If the squirrels don't invade or damage the structure of the domicile and other supportive constituent architectural elements I normally would claim a victory but the problem I have is the bird feeders...

    I want a backyard filled with nature's creatures including the damned squirrels but they can and will aggressively plunder and damage to the point of destruction anything resembling a bird feeder...

    Yes we have run the gamut of hanging them from thin braided steel cables that are greased up and shielded - we have done the shark cage route - we have tried the gamut of gimmicks and some do better than others but squirrels are smart little persistent devils...

    So it's a cold war with fortified stable borders - the pets chase them and occasionally kill them - the air rifles can be tuned to kill or to slap and stun - we periodically test out and deploy new innovative anti squirrel technology that goes from primitive to cutting edge.

    I don't believe I can or will solve the problem giving the parameters and limitations I must deal with (we have a lot of mature trees and we back onto a state nature preserve park area and we don't want to scorch earth eliminate nature's critters - we want then around while limiting there destructive potential)

    We also have reticulated chipmunks - we like them and they are nothing like squirrels in behavior and impact or footprint - and they are new comers to the region - we did not have them ten years ago.

    I am sure he / she has moved on to better grounds
    when my mom and dad were still alive as most of us know age seems to soften our view on life of other creatures .
    they lived in town and had a lot of squirrels around the neighborhood over time mom started feeding them and toward the end they would open the back door and the squirrels would come up to the door for food
    any way my dad when younger, they were a big source of food for his family ( along with all game they could hunt )
    he told me no way could he harm one now after watching them play and run around the back yard
    at that time I thought OK , .

    Just repaired two vehicles they chewed the wiring on. Gave up on drip irrigation hoses that had so many holes that it wasn't repairable. They chewed chain link fence aluminum clips off.


    IF you fed them, they wouldn't bother the other stuff. :D

    Yep a good healthy lead diet will do wonders......................

    I figure that the way the ones around here act is due to a severe lead deficiency.
    I try to help them out with that.

    Some folks like them but around here they are like rats with a custom tail.

    If you ever had one in your attic space you would think very little of squirels.

    he would not last long if he had hung around . no more than the rats or occasional ground hog .

    Squirrels, mice whatever chew on the wire coatings because many are "soy bean" based :roll:

    The tree rats got into my first house.
    Never let one live near me and Mr Sheridan again.

    I have a custom made log cabin, that I built. I am very fond of it.
    Ten years ago, a couple of G-D squirrels began chewing up the dovetail notches. They would perch up on the porch rail, and chew away on the notch.

    Now I love all of God's creatures and I think squirrels are cute. But, eating my house? No way, Jose!
    What nutritional value is there in white pine? What in the world?

    So I went after them banging pots and pans. Chased them away a few times with fire crackers. Still, they came back.

    So, one day, I ran out on the porch, the damn squirrel was chewing on my hand made dovetail notch. He ran only about fifty feet and perched up in a tree about 15 feet up. I guess he felt safe.
    But, I was carrying my Savage muzzleloader. Loaded up with a 250 XTP with smokeless, loaded up at 3,100 foot pounds. Had a real good scope.
    I shot that squirrel right in the middle of the back. What can I say, I don't have a .22

    @* was running towards the French Broad River at 88 mph, looked to me like flames were coming from his mouth. That put the end to squirrels eating my house.

    They are cute but really, they are just rats with furry tails. Screw 'em.
