Solyndra for one, WELFARE, fires and floods (fema), those are just right off the top of my head that stick out, not to mention other grants and subsidies to others in that state.
If we are $22 trillion in dept, nobody is paying more than they take. Do the math, and I haven't even begun to add what a public service union pension plan pays to all the goobermint retires in California.

The only problem with this scenario you is that we'll have a bunch of illegal aliens ( Californians) trying to get into the United States from the West. Of course the ones that can contribute to the United States will be gladly accepted in.

But even if what you are saying is true which it's not, how many big businesses that are paying the most taxes to the state you're going to stay in the state when they can't sell their Wares to anybody but California residents??? They will all move back into the United States where they can sell their Wares to the United States. California will be a bankrupt dry Dust Bowl without the water and the businesses that are there to support it.

Rem, they already left, along with anyone else that could afford to. Calif is at the top of the list of states that people are moving out of. ID, AZ, and Tx are the top three states they are going to, and that's driving housing costs there. For your own edification, if you can at least find out how and where the numbers in those links were gathered and what they all include or do not include, I think you will have your answer.
Are we including or excluding moneys given in relief, or other programs? Agriculture? Fires, floods and natural disasters? Are we talking solely about checks written to the state and from the state?
I for one don't see the numbers adding up. Like going to the grocery store, I have a general idea of what I bought and what it should cost. When that number is considerable off, I go back line by line.
Since I have no way to hold them accountable, I am not going to line by line budget fact check, I KNOW it is way off compared to what is being said.
The national debt is $22 trillion and climbing, the numbers don't add up no matter how you slice it. If all states were identical the shared debt would be around just under 1/2 trillion dollars per state.
So lets talk metrics. Let'f figure out how and why and who gets the money and when.
Federal employees
farm subsidies
school allotments
roads
failed energy companies
tax subsidies for failed business
SS
welfare
veterans and VA
In my home state of Arizona, we have a very small amount of these govmt entitlements. Californa is a nanny, big government state.
The study posted listed per capita stats, not actual dollars in a balance sheet. The IRS could possibly have stats on how much California business and individuals paid. Where do you get the stats for all the programs supported in each state? That is going to be a fragmented collection and compilation of money spent. Some of it would even have to be projected and prorated by years. Some of it is failed business like Solyndra, 1/2 billion on just one California business.
Detroit, how much was that bailout? Then do you add the losses investors took to the balance sheet of the state lived in?
So for these political hacks to bend and cherry pick stats that they like and allude that it is fact, is pure poppycock. The fact that we are even having this conversation, might open the eyes of others who may ask more questions without blindly taking the convoluted stats as fact or real financial status.
$22,000,000,000,000, where did it go? Can they produce receipts? Some went to foreign charity, but what about the rest? California isn't paying their fair share would be my guess. We haven't even delved into national security as it pertains to protecting California with our Navy and Coast Guard.
That begs the question of who should bare that cost and should it be on a percentage or on who benefits directly and how much to prorate that expense? I don't need the coast guard or navy protecting me in Arizona.
So then what should California's portion be if they decided to actually defect?
