some basic things you can do to help and a doc may figure out a specific help for your problem....i have noticed that i was lied to about the "golden" years......a time of life where you do less with more difficulty.....i try to keep moving so some of that chit does not catch up with me ????

I only get it in the left big toe.
Colchicne is the drug that the doc gives me. It's an anti-Inflammatory. I only use it when needed
Works in a day or 2

Yeah first time I thought I broke my toe surfing- went to ER- nurse looks down and in 2 seconds says gout.

Yep. Left big toe. Did you ever think something that small could hurt that bad?

Get yourself some tart cherry. I use Knudsens just tart cherry juice and sometimes you can find tart cherry in capsule form with the vitamins.

    https://www.rwknudsenfamily.com/products/single-fruit-juices/just-tart-cherry

You need to flush out the uric acid. Anti-Oxidants help with that. See the Doc and get some meds. Expect some blood tests to confirm.

Had my first gout attack in my left ankle/foot a year or so ago. Always thought those that complained about it were a bunch of pansies.

By the time I/we got it figured out, I was hobbling with a crutch.

Had it one or two times later in my left thumb. Not nearly as bad, but still painful.

For me, it is simply keeping hydrated. My medical condition (having no large intestine) makes me susceptible to dehydration, and if I keep my fluids up, gout stays away. Have only had to use the pills that first time.

Good luck. It is not an enjoyable experience.

Gout should be used in interrogation of terrorist. It's the most painful thing I have ever
    been thru.
I get it about twice or three times a year.
My trouble is, I take 2 water pills to reduce water retention for my heart.
The water pills Leave the crystals in the joints when they flush out the water.
Pure cherry juice does help shorten the bouts for me.
Avoid aspirin for the pain, it makes it worse.

I've had it twice in my right big toe. The first time I woke up about 4 am with severe pain in my right big toe. Just having a sheet on it really made it worse. I got up and could barely stand to walk. The worst part was that I had to leave in a few hours for a 4 hour trip to southern Ohio. I was never so thankful for cruise control as I was that day. It took a few days before the toe was back to normal.

The second attack wasn't as bad, maybe because by then I knew what it was. That was when I started a daily regimen of Juicy Juice 100% cherry juice. I haven't had an attack since. That's been about 10 years or so since.

I now have a lot of arthritis and especially in my left toe which flairs up before we get a storm. It hurts, but nowhere near as bad as the gout.

Like Dave, my bypass surgery was a piece of cake compared to the gout.

I have a high pain tolerance ( drove myself to the hospital when I dislocated my shoulder; when I was in college and decided to do something about the pain in my left side doc said I had about an hour before appendix ruptured ) but when gout hits I only want to sit very still in a warm place and not even let a draft hit my left big toe.

    Allopuinol every morning.

Haven't had a problem since started taking it; not gonna risk it to see if I can do without.

Found out it high uric acid was the result of being treated for tuberculosis which a college roommate's cousin apparently shared with me.

If I went by what I read on the Internet about my health according to symptoms I would need to be quarantined. If you read the side effects of medicine there's nothing that you can take that won't cause some kind of horrible death.

I have a friend that has gout really bad oh, and the only thing that helps him is prickly pear fruit. He might give it a try, plus if you like watermelon you'll love prickly pear fruit you can get it at a Mexican store. But they call it tunas... just like tuna fish but with an s on the end. He says that works a lot better then the prescription is doctor was giving him

I called my doc this morning when then opened up ( they most of the time keep a couple spots open if you call early ) went in 9:30 gave me some steroids and did a blood draw to see which variation I have ( there is two )
as of now still have not slept . I did not think the pain could get worse last night but today proved that wrong
hopefully the steroids will kick in its a 6 day regiment 6 first day then -1 each day until gone
taking my pain pill and the steroids I had at least ten minutes of just "conformable pain " but went back to all out profanity if I tried to put weight or walk
oh well it can always be worse and hope its a one time ordeal left foot big toe .. doc did not really do much looked at it agreed with what I said , he would touch it told me he knew how bad it can hurt .
I am hoping to fall asleep or just pass out from fatigue any time now
thanks for all the advise and reply's

I have Gout but keep it controlled by avoiding organ meats.
Of course this means no liver, but it also means no sausages of ANY kind.
That is the place for scrap meats and organ meats, in sausage, pepperoni, summer sausage, etc.
And the use of cherries in any form, fresh, dried and cherry juices.

Cancer is not gout - certainly not intractable level 8-10 pain either...

Prescription naproxin is good stuff and is an anti-inflammatory and can help

Pharmacy bought lido Cain patches can help...

Tramadol is for back pain but may prove useful...

Heat or cold may provide some relief

Icy hot cream can also provide some relief

Taking some cough and cold syrup or benadryl may help with sleep

Blue emu and similar products can be helpful

Schedule 3 narcotics probably best for the pain but have their own issues.

Please school me and let me know if any of these work - and what works for you

    Mike

Except for Mr. Mike you boys are pain rookies. :D

Try having a foot of your large intestine removed while you're still awake and the doctors don't know it. I felt like tracking down the anesthesiologist and kidnapping him and torturing him for a few days. Let him see how it feels. :x

Drink lots of water!!!! I have had a 95% reduction in gout attacks by staying hydrated. Stress, alcohol, dehydration and some food can trigger gout. Mine is stress and dehydration coupled with the smallest injury. If I stay drinking about a gallon of water a day gout becomes a distant horrid memory. The only pain that came close to gout was the muscle spasms from my neck surgery; it was my first experience with level 9-10 pain causing me to vomit, cry and pee myself. Gout is a 7-8 on that scale and a minor annoyance in comparison.

I really have empathy for you, gout sucks.

    Update?? How you doing??

    thanks Joe
and all who replied .. I am just finishing up my 6 day run on the pills the doc issued to me and I would say 95% back to some what normal
from a pain I have never felt before to back walking and a huge relief
I am a bit puzzled as all I went thru and I am guessing the doc some what agreed was gout by his verification and treatment of me
but my blood test came back and they talked to my wife ( long story but her cell phone is our old phone number from land line forever ) negative for gout a couple days back .
I truly think the test must have been a fail / bad reading ? :? :? not that I am upset it was not declared gout , but what I went thru matched 100% with all I have read or talked to other's who have had it even the people my wife work's with who suffered thru it .
bottom line I hope I never have it again what ever its classified as in the end .

I too have had doctors reluction to say it's gout. I think their tests when preformed too
late in the attack show up as negatives.
    The pain sure ain't negative!!
    Here's the clinical meaning:

"Gout is a form of arthritis caused by excess uric acid in the bloodstream. The symptoms of gout are due to the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints and the body's response to them. Gout most classically affects the joint in the base of the big toe.Nov 28, 2017"

Perhaps the tests that look for the acid in bloodstream are not seeing the crystals already hurting us.???

I've had Gout in reoccurring sessions for 25 years. Both big toes, both ankles, both knees! The last attack was in my right ring finger. It came on slowly, and being a stubborn fool, I believed I broke the knuckle somehow. My home remedies Did not work. After about 7-8 days I went to my Dr., He looked and said "GOUT" ! I now have permanent damage to that joint, because of the delay. Indomethacin and Allopurinol are your friend.
