i was on temporary duty to Ft Campbell Ky in 1970-71 went to Nashville to the Opera and saw him perform in the closing act. went around back in the alley where the entertainers left from and got his autograph. have since lost it but will always remember the show. 0 -

Damn, grew up in utter poverty in the desert, but became a music superstar.
I listen to Marty all the time on Willie's Road House on Sirius radio, love El Paso, especially since I go to El Paso all the time in the big rig. Every time I go there, as I approach the town through the hills, in the west Texas desert, I look to my left for five mounted cowboys, and look to my right, for a dozen or more.
Also I have been trying to find Rosa's Cantina but no luck so far.0 -

Another classic. Hell I hadn't known that Marty wrote El Paso so I guess he wrote Big Iron as well.
This guy was so talented, what a great voice. You know, the writer of the song makes more money than the guy who sings it.
So you take a monster smash hit like El Paso, only God knows how much money he made off of that one song. In today's dollars, many millions.
