When I have to ride with my wife, I prefer to ride in the back.
That has worked for a long time, but now the kids are fighting me for the front.
I guess they don't like her driving either.

Personally, I have to tell them how to drive I won't ride with them. My life's too valuable for that

I'm picky who I ride with and have been for many years after a near death experience.

I was in a friends car one night back in 1968 when I was 18 years old and he crashed the '56 Chevy that we were in at over 110 mph. He hit a hump in the road, lost control and the car went airborne and left the pavement and the old Chevy rolled in the air and knocked down 1 power pole with the top of the car and then flipped and knocked down a smaller telephone pole along with a tree and a fence before the car came to rest over the top of me in a ditch. I was thrown out of the car luckily or the pole would have killed me when it flattened the top of the car. I woke up under the car with my legs bent backwards under me.

Luckily the weight of the car was not on me. Some people came and looked with flashlights and they said they were afraid to pull me out from under the car but I knew one of the guys and he was a friend of mine and he had crawled up to where he could reach me and I told him to get me out of here. I told him I would rather die being pulled out than burn to death under this car. He said I'll get you out of here. He managed to straighten out my legs and dragged me out. My friend that was driving was thrown into the floor board of the car and only received a gash across his nose through all of that.

When the ambulance got there and they put me in the back and took off to the hospital. As I lay there I looked up and one of the ambulance attendants working on me was a guy that I had gotten into a fight with a couple of weeks earlier. I thought to myself, well what luck, I'll never make it out of here alive now for sure. I just shut my eyes and went to sleep figuring this was the end.

Well I made it out of the ambulance alive. I woke up in the hospital emergency room from pain with them sewing up the cuts in the top of my head. I had a broke back, broke heel, broke nose and lots of misc. stitches. My L2 vertebrate was crushed flat on one side where I had been bent double.

I asked the doctor in charge when I would get out and he just shook his head and said we'll have to take it one day at a time.

Then things got a little strange. The next day my dear old deaf Grandma came to my room to visit. She was a very religious woman and I loved her very much. She laid some kind of cloth on my chest and got down on her knees and prayed and cried for a very long time. I had never been much on religion at that age and only went to Church when my parents would drag me there. I didn't think the praying would help but I didn't say anything cause I was willing to try anything at that point. After about 3 days I started noticing the pain was going away. By the 7th day I walked out of that hospital on my own 2 feet.

My doctor said the latest X-Ray on the day I left the hospital showed no sign that my L2 vertebrate had been crushed. He said I can't explain it. I told him I can and she's a little old lady that's 80 years old that's watched over me since I was born. God bless my Granny if anyone ever had a hot line to the Lord she had the red phone.

Do I believe in miracles? You better believe it!

I admit I rode with a lot of buddies "back in the day " who in reality should not have been driving but it was around town and slow speeds , felt safe
but I loved fast cars and scared the crap out of a lot of buddies over the years seems going fast was not as much fun as they thought it was going to be
my wife took over driving almost 40 years ago , she decided she was more afraid of my driving then the other on the highway she had fear of driving in heavy traffic or thru bigger cities , I use to tell my coworkes they thought I was kidding until we would meet up some place and my wife was driving
it took a bit but I got to where I just get in the passenger seat read or sleep , honest on long trips like vacations 98% of the time I have no idea where were at any given time along the way when we go any where, I do not pay attention to directions land marks or traffic . same when riding with my sons ( they drive like me fast and aggressive )

I do remind my wife she totaled out a car I never have
once in South Carolina we were parking in a small parking lot down down Charleston
the old fellow in charge and taking my 10.00 was giving directions to my wife about getting as close and cut the wheel harder
he got frustrated stuck his hand in the drivers window grabbed the wheel and turned it all the way to the left ,, shook his head and said something like women they just can not drive worth a crap ... pissed my wife off all I could do was laugh my ass off

When a passenger closing my eyes frequently helps quiet my mind... Much prefer being in the driver seat,,,

Not at all. I am stomping a hole in the floor on the imaginary brake pedal. I also don't like giving directions, I would just as soon drive myself.

    In my lifetime:
I taught my wife to drive a 4 speed manual stick.
I taught 4 children to drive.
I taught 3 grandchildren to drive
I taught grandson's girlfriend (now his wife) to drive

I am so laid back, I take Valium to wake up. The deal with all of them was- I will never yell at you. I will repeat instructions in a calm tone if you need to do something more. If I say "BRAKE" you immediately step on brake.

Be like Yoda, you must. Start spazzing out, you will distract the driver. If there is IMMINENT DANGER, say "BRAKE". Otherwise, SHUT UP.

Who was my model as an instructor? A Warrant Officer that was my instructor-pilot, who taught me to fly a TH-55 helicopter for the US Army. If being a passenger in a car makes you nervous, imagine the poor SOB that is an IP trying to teach a rookie to hover a helicopter. It is UGLY.

Yuppers to that. I was a USAF jet instructor. I taught Americans and students from numerous other countries, including Iranians. If anything can teach you to be a calm and collected right-seater, that job is it, brother.

I can't stand the way my wife drives. She trundles along just under the speed limit (which is fine) but she habitually does it in the passing lane. I cannot begin to tell you the number of middle fingers I have observed going around her - but she is oblivious to it all.

How can you ride shotgun if you?re not riding shotgun?

Was that for me? The T-37 sat side-by-side with the IP in the right seat.
