What would be the best way to protect buried fire arms from corrosion?

  Think about getting below the frost line. Should help in avoiding condensation. Temp stays the same all year long at certain elevations below grade.
  
  I agree with the first posts, PVC pipe is the way to go. Spraying a little WD-40 in the tube would help with moisture. (Not directly on gun).
  
  Desiccant is a good idea, buy industrial (compressed air dryer) "blue" indicating and put in coffee filters. Use "tie wires" that come with a loaf of bread. Desiccant that turns "clear",, a few minutes in the microwave will dry the "beads" out and they'll return to blue.
  
  Once you've sealed the ends, desiccant going clear would mean no moisture would be left and it'd sit for a minimum of 20 years.
  
  Off hand I'd say burying vertical might mean you're getting half below and half above the frost line. A slight angle would not hurt but that would mean your expecting "moisture" and you CAN NOT HAVE any moisture.
  
  On line sellers usually have the best deals on desiccant.
