HVAC help
I?m way over due for a new heat pump, but was waiting on funds. However, while checking it out today, discovered that the outside compressor and fan will not come on. Inside fan came on.
Is there a reset somewhere on the unit?
We have wood heat and gas logs so we are ok til it gets warmer.

Pull the disconnect for the unit. Most likely a capacitor not making it come on. You can actually leave the power on and bump the contacts in the center of them with a pencil and see if the fan will work. Pull the power to change the capacitor. 0 -
Depends on the unit make,.......Rheem/Ruud used to use a manual reset high pressure cut-out that was mounted in the bottom of the condenser cabinet by the service valves. It had to be manually pushed to reset. It broke the low voltage signal so nothing ran outside. Was a button covered in red rubber.
Could be a break in your low voltage wire to the outside unit, a tripped/bad breaker, or a bad contactor coil, or contacts. A bad dual capacitor will keep it from doing anything, but the contactor will still be pulled in, and will probably be making a low level buzz if you put your ear to the cabinet. This condition causes the compressor, and fan motor both to cycle on the thermal overload which is not a desirable condition. They will eventually fail, and usually fail open.

needs more troubleshooting to determine if the unit even had a call for cooling, turn stat all the way down and check unit to see if you have 24 volt going to compressor contactor, you may also have a low temp lockout. 0 -
