first handgun that honestly hurt

I have owned about every big hand cannon out there. I actually enjoy shooting my S&W 500.. A friend come by today with his new pocket toy.. He had not yet fired it and wanted me to be the guinea pig. Bond Arms 44 magnum with a 6 inch ported barrel..Not only does it hurt,,it will blind you. If you close enough to your attacker you would not have to hit him,, He will be blinded and burnt to a crisp from the fireball

    For me it was a S&W 329PD I also have a 500 and enjoy shooting it. The 329PD was the equivalent of someone hitting my knuckles with a crowbar

    I have fired one of those short barreled SW 500s with 3.5'' barrel as well as a 357 derringer. With both, the muzzle blast and flash was so intense, it totally whitened out the target and this was in bright sunlight. The blasts were so great, I never really sensed the recoil.

    In both instances, I did make direct hits thank goodness, because getting off fast a second would have impossible. Impossible not from the recoil, but from temporary blindness. I could only imagine how firing one of these flamethrowers at night would be.
    I too own a SW 500, but it has a long barrel and does not blind me when if fire it.

    I have the 3" version with no porting. I think Bond made them for about 20 minutes a few years back. Hurts like hell. The 3" 410s are pretty bad too.

    probably not on the level you are describing but the most uncomfortable revolver i have ever shot was a python with 125 gr supervels. they would drive that serrated backstrap into your palm and were not pleasant to shoot

    My Taurus 850 .38 Special when loaded with Buffalo Bore 158 grain +p hollowpoint was downright brutal and left my palms stinging for a long time.

    I have not fired off any of the short barrel flame thrower's but remember the first 44 mag I fired off was a little anxious but it was fun but loud when you have only shot 22's
    I did get to fire a few rounds thru a 500 S&W last fall again I was a little concerned but was not as bad as I thought would not want to shoot all day with it but poping off a few rounds was fun ( I would like to have one but time will tell )

    Several of the small old school derringers - Remington over and under .41 rf and colt open top .32 rf and sharps pepperbox quads or red jackets or blue jackets or cupfires or panties...

    So small and so short and diminutive - and some of that ammo had quite a bit of zip and snap to it...

    Not so much that your hand went numb or a car crashed - but they tried to come around on you and spin in your hand - muzzle flip and wrist snap beyond expectations...

    And yes some flame and smoke belching from not only the end of the bbl but from anywhere not perfectly machined or sealed.

    In particular I have a 3 bbl stacked .25 long XL rimfire from Belgium with 2.5" bbl's that is like a poor Hollywood depiction of a grenade going off

    The ammo I have is Canadian old dominion / CIL and it's a hot load for sure

    They can surprise you is what I am saying

    There is a single shot break open pivot British boot pistol in .50 rf that is absurd - but I think I have rifle and carbine ammo not the load designed for the gun

    A Ruger .45 lc loaded fairly hot in a single action will tear my hand up. It has orginal wooden grips that a tad small for my hand. The recoil just digs into my palm like there's no tomorrow.

    Ive' never fired a "really" big bore like some of you guys, couldn't afford the ammo at any rate :)

    My Interarms 6" 44 Mag revolver is a real flamethrower. I gave up on shooting mag loads and now only shoot 44 specials. For the sake of my ears, hands and skinned fingers. The thought of being on the recieving end of that blast is truly scary...

    I enjoy shooting my 4" S&W 500 Mag and my Desert Eagle .50 AE but the gun I carry most of the time is a S&W 340PD .357 Mag snubby that weights 11.5 ounces which is pretty brutal with .357 Mag rounds. 38 Special in it is not to bad but still pretty stout. I probably wouldn't notice the recoil if I had to use it to fend for my life and would probably be wishing it was a 500 Mag instead of a .357 Mag.

    Don't know what I was thinking but shot an Encore 45/70.. even had the rubber grips.. muzzle brake. It stung. Next time let the owner show you how it shoots.. First..

    That's the one I intended to mention.
    I had two at the time. A 7 1/2" and 4 5/8". Had developed a load for carry in the long barrel when I was fishing in Alaska and decided to try the same load in the short. Forgot to consider I had lengthened the grip frame and added custom stocks to the 7 1/2" to tame that load down some. Was not at all prepared for the handful I had.

    Guns as you describe, and there appears to be a new one almost every other day, cater more to our contemplative needs than our practical ones. Put another way, the mere idea of these hand cannons is their predominant appeal, not their actual utility. Of course one can imagine scenario after scenario wherein a rhinoceros escapes from a zoo and is making a fast trot to a schoolyard at recess, with the lives of tomorrow's Presidents and "Dancing With The Stars" hopefuls in one's hands. And in one's hands, of course, is a 600 Nitro Express derringer loaded with two horn-busting solids. But really. Guns like these are more for affect than effect. And guys buy them for same reason they put socks in the front of their bathing suits.

    +1 My Blackhawks are 7-1/2" and 5-1/2" barrels. I load 300 grain Hornady XTP hollow points with 21 grains of Win 296. They were around 1300fps. After a few rounds I installed a set of Pachmayr grips on the 5-1/2" gun.
