How Many Guns Are There in the US? A Lot More Than You Think

It?s been said, ?Law-abiding gun owners have over 300 million guns?and 12 trillion rounds of ammo. If we were a problem, you?d know it!?

But what if that ?300 million? estimate is wrong?


According to these calculations, it is.

We believe that the correct number is much higher ? somewhere between 412 and 660 million. You may wonder how we came to that number, so buckle up (and cringe, if you?re a math-phobe, although it never gets too theoretical): unlike most of the academics and reporters we linked above, we?re going to use publicly available data, and show our work.

What if we told you that one ATF computer system logged, by serial number, 252,000,000 unique firearms, and represented only those firearms manufactured, imported or sold by a relatively small number of the nation?s tens of thousands of Federal Firearms Licensees?

Absent a better idea, we can say that the US inventory of firearms is almost certainly between 412 and 660 million, not the lower numbers recently trumpeted in the media.

Weapons Man goes into great detail to explain the logic behind the calculation and after reviewing his work (particularly the numbers from the FFL on NICS checks), I?m convinced we own upwards of 600 million guns in America ? which is more than double than what is being reported by the media.

So, I guess the saying really is true.

?Law-abiding gun owners have over 600 million guns? and 25 trillion rounds of ammo. If we were a problem, you?d know it!?

    I would believe it. We have been making "modern guns" for more than a century. Most of those are still around. ;)

    Actually that's why we don't have a problem. If we didn't have as many guns in the hands of citizens as we do, the government would have made us all servants by now

    We would be posting a recipe to a 4 time used fish head soup instead of recipes about good food that people post here

    And we would all be jealous of Ken being able to afford tacos at Taco Bell

    it will take that many or more if needed to back down those in the USA who are trying to subvert the CONSTITUTION and tax away the USA to provide FREE WELFARE TO THE WORLD.......close our borders to immigration and bring our money home to fix up our own problems

    They already have subverted the Constitution with The federal reserve act giving that power to an independent foreign power.

    Illegal aliens voting?
    Adding 2 more justices to the supreme court?
    Banning conservatives on social media?
    Using "hate speech" to silence opposing views?
    24/7 liberal propaganda on all forms of media.
    Banning Fox news from hosting presidential debate?

    It would be interesting to know how many stripped AR-15 lowers were sold in the past decade, let alone any other firearms. It like the under estimation of illegal aliens in the US...if the media is saying 25 million it's probably more likely 40 million.
