Dad was in the Hospice section of the local hospital. When I got there he was thrashing about and moaning loudly. I pulled up a chair beside his bed, held his hand, told him I was there. I called to the nurse and asked her to administer more morphine because he was in so much pain. She said that she needed permission from the Dr. first. I told her to call him now. She called and the Dr. didn't return her call for over an hour. Dad was squeezing my hand as hard as he could as he thrashed around, and I was getting more aggravated by the minute. There was no reason that someone at the end of their life should suffer so needlessly. I don't blame Hospice, but I do have an issue with letting young inexperienced nurses being in charge of making decisions at the end of life.

Hospice was involved with my Mother's end, and also my Stepfathers death. We had experienced nurses in charge of their care and the results were the exact opposite of Dad's death. They both went peacefully and without any drama.

Dad died Dec 6, 2013, and it still chokes me up just thinking about that day.

My only advice is to make sure that your Dad has a living will and that the terms are carried out. It will make the end much easier to endure. I know what you are going through, but it does get better, eventually.

Beyond prayers and benedictions and offerings is they anything we can do for you and yours...

I spend a lot of time with hospice patients and with children on the pediatric oncology ward and it never gets easier - for me it only gets harder...

But that's a flaw in my character and a sign that I am not strong.

May he go with god and escape the pain as comfortably physically and mentally and emotionally and spiritually as possible surrounded by nurses and family knowing they are there and they love him and that it's okay now to let go and pass over - to relinquish the pain and burdens...

High lust and forward bearing - proud heart - rebellious brow... lord grant him the strength to die

Sat by my Mom's side for 10 days after they operated on her for Ovarian Cancer. She survived Colon Cancer for 17 years. The last three days of her life were awful with all that Morphine. Please know that You and Your Dad have my prayers.
