New Pup
Wife just got a 6 month old Jack Russel.Great pup,full of piss and vinegar but he hates riding in the car.Anything I can do to help get him over it?

The fellow we got our pup from drove him 6 hours in the back of a pick up truck when he delivered him. After that, he really didn't want to get back in a vehicle. After a while (and a few treats and some prodding) he came around. Now I can't leave the truck door open.
He still won't hop in the bed of the truck though.
He's my little buddy (at 90 lbs) and my best friend.0 -
If you let him roam free in the vehicle, try kenneling him. 0 -

Get him extra hungry. Use tons of treats and very short tips and lots of praise. Won't take long. 0 -
My two Walker Hounds are rescues. I'm not sure what their past was like, but, despite several years of positive reinforcement and gradual attempts to put them at ease, they still hate getting in the Jeep. Any ride longer than a few miles and at least one starts throwing up. Ugh. (They were also so scared from whatever prior experience they had that, for nearly the first six months, I couldn't even look at them without both cowering and running away. That took a lot of time and positive reinforcement to overcome. Believe me, they're happy, friendly, playful dogs now.) I'm still working on several approaches as noted above: short rides, leaving the rig open and parked so they can be around it as well as other positive type reinforcements. Eventually something will work. Critters don't generally "get that way" overnight nor will they "get better" quickly either. Keep at it, time and patience will build a trust and your little guy will come around. 0 -
Take him with you when you go through drive up windows. Most folks at those have dog treats and pretty soon he'll start equating rides with treats and he won't let you out of the house without him. 0 -
I feel for you Buddy.
If I get home, and go somewhere in the vehicle without my Buddy, the SHWHTF.
He is super well behaved once in the vehicle.
Asking him, "Do you want to go for a ride?" Will exhibit carwheels, and exuberant behavior in general.0 -

I had my little dog Cookie for 17 years. She hated riding in a car and never got used to it. I got Dramamine for her, I got a scrip from the doc I think it was Valium not sure, but nothing worked she hated a car ride after 16 years, just as much as she hated it when she was a puppy.
