My son moved out.....a tale of denial and directions
I've had a lot going on this past week trying to handle my mother's final expenses and such. So, when my son came home and said "I'm moving into an apartment with a guy I work with I wasn't really ready to question anything. He asked if we could come check out his new place and I replied......"you want us to pack your things up and help you move don't you?" (This is the real reason he wanted us to check this place out.
So, I ask the name of the guy he is moving in with........Liam says "Cole".......what is Cole's last name???? Liam has no idea.
We get his things put in my car and we start to follow him. (He takes a couple of his guns with him which makes me a bit nervous.) I'm in the car with Larry and we are following him as he drives around and we make it over to a nice part of town.......we keep driving......and winding around......going further and further into some pretty expensive areas. Eventually he takes a right.....we keep going......another right......we are making a HUGE circle.
The boy has driven in a giant triangle......taking us from our place to a nice part of town and then making a B-line for the ghetto. I am no kidding when I say we end up in some apartments that could probably be condemned if a true inspection of any kind were done. Me, Larry and Liam are the only white people there.....including his new room mate.
Liam introduces me to Cole and I instantly like him. He is tall with a HUGE smile and speaks like someone that has had a lot of family interaction. He says yes mam and gives details when speaking like someone that can hold a decent conversation. So, I start feeling better about things. Cole says the apartment was actually his parents place before they moved in with his sister when she got married and bought a house.
The place is not a total rat hole, but I can't imagine anything but two guys being perfectly fine living there. Liam has been painting, they made a big grocery run, he has come to get things a couple times. I'm going to have to get some more Tervis cups. I think its a right of passage that any kid of mine that moves out takes all my good cups with them.

When our third daughter moved out, it became very quiet around here. One morning I said to my wife ?Listen...?
She said ?What? I don?t hear anything.?
I said ?Exactly!?
Then the grandkids came.

I've lived in some pretty sketchy places Kasey, when first starting out.
I'm sure my Parents did not approve. You have to give them Wings eventually.
I do however, have reservations about taking firearms to such places. One firearm, (carried) is different.
Best to you and your Son, Liam.0 -
When I was in the Navy I moved off base with some friends and I cannot imagine my parents would be ok with any of those places. The guns are the only thing that worry me. He has a little pocket 380 and two rifles. I told him he NEEDED to take his little stand up locker at the very least.......he thinks I'm worried about someone stealing things, but its the idea of someone that doesn't know what they are doing coming in and picking something up that terrifies me more. 0 -
His roommate sounds like Eddy Haskel 0 -
Tell him to get rid of any Gun related bumper stickers or anything else that say's he has them! 0 -
Well, I hope things go well for the young man. You've raised him up, time for him to spread his wings and test them out a bit. 0 -
Kasey, from everything you have told us about your children, He will be fine. You and Larry raised those children right. Let his spread his wings and fly. He might crash, but that is why you are there. To pick him up, dust him off and let him fly again. We did this with our son Chris. He is now back home and ready to leave again. He is buying a home. THANK GOD!!!
. As far as the guns go, I would make him purchase a quality safe, before they left the home, PERIOD. As far as those two young men being the only white people over there, I wouldn't worry too much, as your son seems like he would make friends real fast. I have a friend that lives in an all black neighborhood. All his neighbors love him. He get invited to all their cookouts, wedding, birthdays and all that stuff. Color is only skin deep. It's what is in a persons heart that makes the difference.

I would make a perfect June Cleaver......OMG......except for the tiny figure, cooking skills, housekeeping regimen, limited vocabulary, and lithium fueled personality......other than this we are twins!

He will be fine... Turn him loose. 0 -
So far, he is doing great. He has been dating a girl for a while now and I fully expect them to move in with each other if they keep it up much longer.
I went ahead and ordered some of those AWESOME Gun Broker Turvis cups.....who knows if I will actually get to keep them this time or not. The kids have moved out, but they still come by. I'll have to start checking their pockets as they walk out the door eventually.0
