My Mother passed away this morning....peacefully
It has been a busy few days. Mother wasn't doing very well for the past few days and we spent last night in the ER. When speaking with the doctors in the ICU we decided a lot of aggressive measures were being taken for her to be with us and it was not in her best interest to keep going. So, at 8am I called the rest of the family and let them know to come to the hospital. She had family with her and passed quickly once the machines were not involved in keeping her here. So, I am thankful for that little bit of relief and pretty much a walking zombie in every other way. I hate that this is my first post on the brand new forums. I do not have a large number of auctions set to start tonight, but there are a few things set to go. I'll get back to normal next week. Right now I'm just kind of numb.

I had to go through this very same thing 4 times. First my Father in law, then my Father, then my Mother, then my Step Father. It doesn't get any easier each time. You did exactly what your mother wanted, that should ease your mind. The pain of losing a parent never goes away, but does diminish over the years. You have my deepest sympathy.

With all due respect, my condolences.
I resolved such an issue and burden placed on a family member with a living will or advanced health care directive.
As such, it states I will not be hooked up to machines to keep me "alive" when the doctor has determined there is very limited hope of recovery.
Legally it seems better not to be hooked up to machines than to have the machines disconnected.
My choice, my decision so there is no burden on anyone else.0 -

Kasey im sorry about your Mom. Prayers asked for you and your family.
I know its hard because i lost my Dad 4 years ago and i still cry today when i think of him.
I imagine a Mom to a lady is like a Dad to a son.
I had to make the decision to turn everything off on my Dad. When i had to make the decision my Mom and Sister was there and they just looked at me. I told the doctor that my Dad did not want this and to stop everything.
Prayers again for you and yours.0 -
I read your post a day or so ago Kasey, but could not reply.

Thank you everyone. Its been a lot to deal with, but I seriously couldn't ask for things to go any easier than they have.
I went to see mother last Tuesday and told my brother and sister that they really needed to go visit her. She just seemed weak and not alert at all. She tested positive for the flu, but her chest xrays were clear the following day. That night we took her to the ER and by the morning they were having to do things like a line directly into her artery, elevating her legs and such to get any pulse at all. By 8am they had moved her to the ICU and I met the doctor in charge. When I spoke with him I told him that my thoughts were that she would want us to let her go, but I'm just the oldest child and I didn't want to really make that decision on my own and the others were on their way to the hospital. He agreed that it was not best to pursue aggressive measures and said he would stop chest compressions and such if it came to that, but would continue everything else until the others arrived to voice their opinions on things. My brother got to the hospital just before she passed away, but my sister had not made it. The doctor said there wasn't anything anyone could do really and that even though we were about to say stop......she died while they were still trying to keep her going.
So, I feel like it was her time. I think she had passed away and was not with us before they actually started trying to save her really.....but I'm not a medical person, so I don't have anything to back up what I think happened. It just seemed she was not there.
The loss is hard, but I think she knew we loved her and we did all we could for her. She never told me what her wishes were as far as burial plans.....so I was a bit shocked when my brother said he told her she wanted to be cremated. When we spoke to my sister she agreed that cremation was what mother wanted. That is actually a very easy and inexpensive thing if you have not checked into this (which I had not until the day came.) So, the thing I've come away from all of this knowing that I didn't before is tell your family what your last wishes are.
I'm meeting my brother and sister over at my mother's house to go through things and get an idea of who wants what is there. Mother didn't have much, so I expect this will be an easy ordeal to deal with. I have been told we will need to hold onto her little house and small bit of land for two years before we sell it to clear any outstanding debt she might have. Its not worth much and its next to other family members who have voiced that they are interested in buying it when the time comes. So, I am actually blessed when it comes to how all of this has gone.
I always thought the day would come and it would be mountains of expense and our family would turn into wolves arguing over every little thing.....but it couldn't have been further from that.
Thank you all for the kind words.....it has meant the world to me. Thank you0 -
Deeply sorry for your loss Kasey.
