Looking for gun I used to own
I am looking for a particular gun I owned years ago,in fact it was the first handgun I was able to purchase legally in 1978.
It is a Smith and Wesson model 67 revolver. The serial # is 3K99048. It was traded to a now closed gunshop near Greensburg PA. about 1991 or so.
The gun has not been stolen from me. I am not a police officer or any kind of law enforcement This not a trap of any kind whatsoever.

You'll never find it without help, it would take a very crazy miracle.
You say the store closed, did the store just shut down or did someone else take it over. When the store closed they probably sent their records into the ATF but not knowing the circumstances did the owner shut the store down and keep the FFL, hence his records? If so maybe he will look it up for you for a fee and put you in contact with who he sold it to. If hes still alive that is, if he is maybe get ahold of him and just ask if he remembers. That would be your ONLY hope of finding it.0 -

It's not impossible that you'll find it again. Twice last year I was checking out stuff on the auction side, and had rifles I sold show up in the listings. One was one of 5000 made, the other was one of 6+ million. Good luck![:)] 0 -

I could get another one but certainly don't want a new one. I'm just taking that little shot in the dark we all talk about in the hope that someone will read this and get back to me. Highly Improbable, sure.

And yes I would buy it back. Like the original post stated, the state is PA. No one in that area has any knowledge of the previous owner or his whereabouts according to some friends in the area who have asked around to other business owners that have been there awhile.0 -
At some point, someone who had the gun may have posted asking about the date of manufacture. If that happened a search for the serial number might help you locate it, except for the fact that many people replace part of the serial number with x's when posting online.
If you got time to kill you might give it a try......0 -
I searched for 10 years for a Colt gold cup, NRA 100 year centennial
edition that I "lost" back in the 80's.
It had the special serial numbers "NRA19xx"
It was at my friends gunshop. He had a fatal heart attack while working there alone late one night.
The next mourning, the first customer came in and called the police.
The shop was taped off as a crime scene.
Loads of guns came up missing.
The stories were many....People came in during the night, customers took
them in the early am hours, police stuffed their patrol car trunks.
Never saw it again.
My only wish is the "new" owner handloaded for it and triple charged
a .45 case and it blew his hand off.

I hear gunfighters back in the old West times would do that, just in case they were killed, there would be money to bury them..
But I doubt that's true, to start with the flames coming off the side of the cylinder that is being fired could possibly ignite the money
Plus that would mean one less cylinder to carry a bullet which could come in very crucial
Also, why not just carry it in your pocket or your hat..0 -

Most/many carried only 5 rounds in the cylinder. Left the hammer down on the empty cylinder0 -

It's been a few years ago but I remember a guy online trying to find a firearm that he used to own. He had posted the serial number and I kept searching various firearm sites and finally found his old gun. I sent him a link to where the newest owner was asking questions about the firearm and had posted the serial number. So it does happen. 0 -
You know this is an impossible task. Even if you found it...and I don't think it's possible...there is no guarantee the current owner would have any interest in parting with it.
This situation pops up once in a while on Internet forums and one time the fellow actually managed to track down his gun because he had a huge head start in following the chain of owners. It was his old service weapon and it was being traded among cops he had worked with. He found it 15 years later. His long retired former chief had it of all things. And he refused to sell it.0 -
I know a guy who found the garand he had been issued in the service online from a third party who bought it from the CMP
But I agree it's like hitting the lotto
