Buy your last table saw first - need advice

That's the advice to people seriously getting into woodworking. Most folks buy a $100 garage sale special, struggle with it a bit and give it away, then buy a $400 saw at Home Depot, use it but realize its limitations and sell it at a significant loss, then buy a Grizzly, use it and sell it at a loss, and finally buy a Powermatic. Along the way they've gone through a lot of frustration and have sort of wasted a lot of money. So they say buy your last table saw first.

I've been shooting trap a good bit lately. Have been using an old 870 and an 11-48. Both are doing OK, but I've been doing this a lot and the fellows at the range tell me to step up to a much better gun and learn on that and, well, buy my last table saw first.

I'm thinking about doing so. I have a budget of about $2,000, maybe $2,500, so the really nice stuff is off the table. I'm tall, about 6'4". Looking for over and under guns folks have liked, that work well, etc. My buddy and I shoot mostly wobble trap and a little trap and skeet. I'm leaning a lot more toward an over and under than an autoloader. I am NOT looking at taking it hunting. My knee has degraded to a point that I just can't go climbing through the woods and over logs and rocks.

Any ideas, please?

    Well, I know next to nothing about trap shooting, or shotguns for that matter. If I was going to do what you're doing, I would approach it in the same manner I would approach the table saw issue. If I was looking for a serious table saw, I would buy a great condition '60s or '70s Delta unisaw.

    I approach many things like this, and I would approach the shotgun the same way. Buy a great condition USED something. This allows you to step up a grade or two in quality while spending the same money as a lesser quality new something, IMO.

    I went from the 870/1100 guns to the Browning Citori and never looked back.

    I shot a little trap many years ago.
    Let me tell you forget name brands, styles, features, ect, ect.

    The gun has to FIT you!!
    If your 870 feels right and points right for you, you won't do any better with a ill fitting $3000 o/u.
    Perazzi shotguns rule most competitions because they are made for you and not for mass marketing.

    +1. I did the exact same thing. Wish I had started with the Citori. They are awesome guns.

    My first table saw is/was a Powermatic. Went with several Brownings for trap and shot them well for the stage I was at.

    Bought a Perazzi and never looked back. Had a custom stock fitted to me and a soft touch recoil pad. During that time I was shooting 30,000 rounds a year.

    I tried Browning Superposied and a Krieghoff O/U when i start shooting skeet but decided semi auto was better for me and shot a Rem 1100 for years. The best shooting gun i have owned or shot for that matter was my Beretta 391 Gold. A supper gun.

    30,000 rounds a year?!?! Wow! That's 575 rounds a week, 23 games a week. You must have gotten SCARY good.

    Went thru the patches: 25 straight, 50, 100, 150, and then 200 straight.

    Around here you have to go clean thru the 100 program targets to get to the shoot offs.
