Making Knives
I plan on making a lot more than 6 but i want 6 exact knives to give them away for Christmas.
I have figured out a way to make a forge easy with parts my dad has from working with propane over 50 years.
I do not have an anval but i have a 8 inch vice with a large area for hammering on. I have a friend that does blacksmith work that has a anvil and other tools he said i could have.
I do not know if i will get the tools from him.
To be honest i can not swing a hammer more than 10 minuets in a day. Its hard to explain i can swing the hammer for 2 or 3 hours with small breaks in between.
However the next 2 to 4 days i am in more pain than you would think possible. While you are doing stuff it hurts so you take more pain medicine and you get by. Then the next day is almost unreal with the pain you have. You can not take enough pain meds to ease it even a little bit.
So if i am going to hammer steel i am going to need a power hammer. I have a lot of stuff to make knives that will not require a lot of hammering.
I have figured out how to heat treat my steel so that is a plus.
Also my grandson and a friend said they would like to help so i have some people to hammer if i want to do that.
I think i will grind or cut metal for this year and then if i like it like i think i will i will buy a power hammer.
The only thing i need that i do not have is a few heating blocks what ever they are called. LOL I also need some brass fittings to finish my forge.
The only tool i need is a table sander. I have a 1 inch sander but i want a 3 or 4 inch one. I have a spindle sander so that will be useful.
So it will not cost much money to get started.
I am hoping i can have my shop cleaned up so i can start in May making knives and making some black powder pistol stocks. I have 2 black powder rifles and 2 black powder pistols to try and copy.
Whether my knives come out bad or great is not as important in the beginning as giving me something to look forward to doing.
I just hate it will take so long to get my shop cleaned up. I will try hard to get that done sooner.

That looks mean. LOL
I will have to have something like that. As long as it is not 3 phase i should be good to go. My shop has 100 amp power feed so it should be good as long as its not 3 phase.
I know i can not hammer out a knife in 1 day without help. To tell the truth my best guess is it would take about 2 weeks to hammer out a knife. Depending on how much metal i had to move.0
