Garand date question

My H&R M1 is serial 4,788,000 which is either 1953 or 54 production (not sure how to read the chart) but the barrel is dated 7/56.

Does that mean the barrel does not belong with that receiver?

    Most likely '54. HRA didn't produce a lot of garands per month/year.
    Is the barrel HRA or SA?

    Might check with Mark when he is back. If it were a carbine it could be a armorer re-barrel, but I don't know if that was done with M1s.

    Yes it was. Thats why I'm curious if the barrel is SA? I don't recall HRA making barrels that late.

    Lots of info {mainly IHC} but it talks about mismatched barrels
    during 1950 and up.

    By the end of production, the latest HRA barrels used were 5/54, according to JC Harrison.

    That can't be. I have HRAs in the 5.6 million serial number range with '55 dated barrels. I don't recall ever seeing a '56 dated HRA barrel. That's why I suspect Doc's 7/56 barrel to be SA. But I haven't checked my books. Many have LMR barrels(Line Material Co.)and those are desirable for their quality/accuracy.
