I have them every night. I have some weird condition where my brain never shuts down.

I have vivid weird dreams that wake me up and when I go back to sleep they start right up where they left off. Needless to say I sleep in about 30 min intervals.

I get the same thing. I can not get my brain to shut off. It is always going at 100 mph. Very frustrating. Every night is like going to the Cinema. Dreams so vivid, you wake up thinking it just happened, how do I explain it?

Sometimes good, most often frustrating. Even with sleep medication, I tend to sleep in 2-3 hour blocks.

I have tried sleep aids like Melatonin and Valerian Root nothing worked.

If I have a few drinks before I go to sleep I will sleep straight through for about 3 hours.....................then its right back to dreaming and waking up every 30 min.

BTW how did your eyes turn out.

My wife lost some of her peripheral vision in one eye, not bad. Other than that she says she sees better now than ever.

I do 10mg. Of Melatonin, combined with 50mg. of Diphenhydramine. Keeps me asleep until about midnight/1AM, then it is game on.

My eyes turned out great. Have not been able to see so well, since I was about 19-20. Very happy. Can not believe I was functioning so long, at such a degraded state of affairs. First eye done was mind blowing. Second eye had more work done to it, however I believe it is better than the first.

    Thanks for asking Sam.

It's very seldom I cannot fall asleep at night and other than maybe one trip to the bathroom around 3-4 AM, sleep soundly thru the night until around 6 AM and very rarely 7 AM.

Dreams ... 99% of the time cannot remember dreaming at night...or if did, don't recall.

    [:)]

    I can only wish.

I am glad for you. If I get a full nights sleep, it is highly unusual.

Sorry to hear of your sleeping problems Ken and Sam. I too have suffered with sleep issues off and on for years. Night terrors were regular for almost a year before speaking with my doctor. The same dream, every night, sometimes multiple times per night. I would get 2-3 hours in, wake up in a panic with my heart racing. I'd then confirm everything was okay, sometimes take a walk through the house, even around it, then go back to bed, rarely back to sleep. I hate taking any drugs. My doctor convinced me that I needed to "break the cycle" and prescribed Ambian (sp?). I took it for only three nights in a row, the nightmares stopped and I got rested in only a few days. That was almost five years ago and I've only called on them two times since. As much as I would have preferred to do it without drugs, my ego wasn't going to help me get well, let alone sleep. Maybe a consideration? [;)]

Generic for Ambien, if I am not mistaken, is Diphenhydramine. It promotes vivid dreams, on it's label.

    You are greatly mistaken.

Ambien is a controlled drug, diphendramine is commonly known by the trade name Benadryl and sold without a prescription.

Benadryl as a sleep aid is easy to use to the point of adverse outcomes, especially the older you get.

It also depresses REM sleep, which is why the labels state to only use for short periods of time.

    Obviously then, I am mistaken.

My family doctor has prescribed me several drugs for sleep over the past couple of years but none of them have worked.

I was at my heart doctor last month for my regular check up and was telling him about my problem sleeping and he wrote a prescription for Ambien. I've been sleeping most of the night now that I've been taking it. Seems like good stuff and it doesn't cause a hangover.

My Heart Doctor recommended Melatonin, which helped. Not the end all be all. Spoke with with my regular Doctor, who said "Regular prescribed sleep aids are not the answer."

Great. What now? Since I can not sleep. [^]

    Establish a sleep hygiene regime.

Avoid exposure to bright lights, especially in the blue spectrum, for several hours before going to bed. No TV or computer....

    Hot bath or shower.

Can try background sounds like rain, forest, or sea surf, but not white noise.

Lower the temperature of the bedroom.

Marijuana is finding some success in replacing other prescription drugs in this area.

Reset with Ambien or Trazadone for only a brief period of time,

    Good Luck !

BTW, might want to review the literature on "second sleep".

I posted about the positive results of Marijuana, then deleted it. I can not/have not partaken due to work in about 7 years. Posted it to Mikes Nausea post.

I retire, (hopefully) in about three years. Different story then.

Many years ago I went through a terrible period in my life. The nightmares were horrific! I learned to tailor my thoughts prior to sleep and direct my dreams. Try it.

I'm usually on my Tablet, (blue light?) prior to sleeping. I can not believe that would inhibit me from an entire nights sleep. I can usually fall, asleep fine. Staying asleep is the problem.

Weird dreams, I see you and raised you this one. I divorced my wife and married her mother in Las Vegas, so her mother can have insurances. Stop by my sister in law in Utah and asked her her "Who's your daddy?" Another dream is where I give all my firearms away for free.:O

Just stay awake for like 48 hours then you will sleep :)

I used to have terrible insomnia, begging for sleep and then morning would come, drag through work thinking as soon as I get home I would sleep only to toss and turn for hours until dawn again.

For some reason as I have gotten older I can sleep better, but as mentioned I have a sleep pattern now too, I don't eat, watch TV or play on computer after 7PM most nights.

Sleep comes in ?fits and starts? here too. ?Re-visits? of some rough days/experiences (A few of you will understand.) that show up often, when least expected, after sleep does arrive, can be a real treat too. As an adult, I?ve learned to always sleep lightly, but the above can be a real pain in the a**.

Totally understand. Sleep can be a blessing, and a curse.

    Best to you Chris.

Close my eyes and there is no guarantee I'll go to sleep if thinking of anything, like wonder if xxxxx or what if xxxxx.

NOPE: Got to think: Go to sleep,,, think xxx,NO Go to sleep, Go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep,,, go to sleep, go to zzzzzz

Works everything, unless it's something like: Did I shut the garage door?

Dreamed We/I were about to be over run by Vietnamese/Chinese etc. (Pick your poison.) Plenty of my weapons laying around, but the best had been "liberated."

Found others laying about/scattered. (Some other weird/off caliber Military variants, I did not recognize as mine.) Ammunition?

The ones I did recognize as mine, mainly Mil. Issue Riot pumps. I was having a difficult time coming up with proper 12ga. loads. (Very frustrating.)

My ammunition hoard was laying scattered over the ground. Scrambling around trying to accumulate amunition/load guns, while the hoards were coming on forthwith. Lesser of my left behind Riot pumps, not funtioning properly. [:0][B)][:(]

I keep most everything in my safe, loaded and ready to go. Am very organized, magazines loaded, things ready to go. The chaos disturbed me.

I have had a very similar dream a few times. Only thing the same in all is not being able to find either ammo for my rifle of choice, or can't find magazines. Allways wake up at a critical moment where bringing a club to a gunfight goes as expected [B)]

You been reading to much Johnny Ringo...

I often think that in such a situation if you were visiting with me your downfall would be deciding which of the collection of guns to use and weighing the pros and cons and admiring things that you would risk getting clipped before you armed up

You know I love you but when you die we are splitting up your gear and sharing out you mole pouches and scrounging through your ruck

    Just sayin

I have always wanted to try the 1886/93 lebel sniper rifle with the Winchester A5 scope on tangos or zombies or Asian hordes

The original 8mm lebel and the later ball D ammo ranged well and had a heavy bullet - and I have some paper patched FMJ / ball handloads that would do nicely

Or some vintage kynoch flat point monolithic solids from god knows when - maybe 100 years old that group well and probably have viscous terminal performance

Very long bbl - full length tube mag - magazine cut off - a truly awesome bayonet - decent vintage American glass

As many of you know I don't sleep well

Have tried most of what's referenced above - ambian and lunesta caused me some scary side effects and did not help with sleep

    I do diphenhydromene and melatonin

I would go 4-5 days with no rem sleep - which apparently can kill you or drive you nuts - they took that category out of the Guinness book of world records cause folks would die or have a psychotic break

Talk to your doctor - an occasional 1mg of lorazapam or atavan might help you

My doc ended up asking me to try Zolof - not cause I am koo-koo for cocoa puffs but because it seems to greatly help regulate sleep

It does work well for me - I just hate having people think I am ready for butterfly nets and a straight jacket and shock therapy

Agree on the light pollution / exposure

I have a particular album I play through headphones that helps me relax and sleep combined with breathing exercises and mental discipline

A trick I learned from a post war study of prisoners of war - have a mental discipline routine - for instance one guy would design a clock in his head - another would spec out a car build in his head - one gent would make up TOE tables for outfitting an imaginary mercenary force

By focusing on this task you often fall asleep well before you make much progress - it can quiet the mind and help turn down or tune out white noise thoughts and a busy brain

I keep a fan running - have used thunderstorm audio - rain - waterfall tracks - whatever asmr sounds sooth you

Just some options - though I suspect you know most of them
