I want to stab the people that created new math

Ageed who needs crazy formulas for simple problems. 0 -
Stupid and complicated.... 0 -
I'm certainly NOT a math person but no way could I have figured that out the way she was teaching.
Kind of like a Business Math class I took at a local community college. One of the professors wrote the book. Took the first test and failed 3 questions. Couldn't figure out why, the professor said I had the right answer BUT I didn't use all five steps that it showed in the book !!!
Ask why I had to show 5 steps when it could be done in 3...because that is the way the book was written and if I didn't do all 5 steps I failed.
Dropped that class within 5 minutes of leaving class.0 -
I'm a graduate engineer. Had no problem with the structural courses, college calculus, physics and beyond. Our grandkids are in a the "new math" program and I seriously don't get it[xx(] 0 -
The Doors
"This Is The End" comes to mind.........[:(]
I mean, it doesnt matter how you figure out an answer, but my mental short cuts are much simpler than that!
And I'm stupid![;)]
Why complicate simplicity?
My Son taught me the "rule of nines" which I never new, when he was like 8!!
Actually pretty cool.......well, if you dont know your multiplication table!

Math & has been the same since the Greeks. Algebra has been around since the 9th century. Calculus since the days of Newton.
All of the above is not new and unfortunately, attempting to screw something up that has been successful for a number of centuries is not new either.0 -
There is no new math, just different ways of working it.
I have no idea what the end goal of this lesson was. If it was simply how to work that problem she is trying to put a 100 gallons in a 55 gallon drum, there's no reason for that. If it was to teach a method that will be required for another application it would be appropriate to do so. Who knows.
Some of the stuff in the home school courses my son is doing has me wondering, why? Often enough when I look ahead I can see the why. Sometimes the why just isn't there and I'll show him a simpler way.0 -
What the f**k....
There's something definitely, DEFINITELY WRONG with that teacher...
Why would she purposely try to confuse a kid like that...
[xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(]
Teach a kid how to do the times tables up to the twelves and he'll be able to figure anything else mathematical out for himself...0 -
10 x 35 = 350
2 x 35 = 70
= 420
I can even add numbers and working on subtraction. [:D]

I left on a date after starting this video and by the time I came back and the teacher finished the problem I was married and had three kids.#65279;0 -
I would've just asked the Chinese looking person in that class for the answer. Or anyone with a calculator. 0 -

Not every Chinese person owns or even knows how to use an abacus...[:D][:D]
Infact this white boy hasn't used one in years and probably would have to take a refresher course in it[^]0 -
Is there actually any point to doing it that way? Does it make it easier in some situations?
I don't know why you wouldn't just do it the old way0 -
seems a stupid way to work a simple problem.... 0
