doggie hotels

I have to fly out of town this weekend to go a family reunion

And I hate it because I have to put my four-legged son in a doggie hotel. I have nobody that can dog sit for me that I can trust that isn't allergic to dogs...[V] my son would be happy to watch my dog, but can't let him inside because his wife is allergic to them, so Rebel would have to stay outside and my dogs are inside dog, so I won't do that to him...

Although I do know he'll enjoy romping around with a bunch of dogs during the day and making new friends, he always had enjoyed it in the past. But I will miss him even if it's only for Friday and Saturday night. And when I've picked him up in the past when I had to go out of town, I can tell he really missed me too...

Anyway, I don't share too much about myself here. But I'm already feeling depressed about having to leave him,[V][V]

    Rem, any chance of having someone critter sit at your house while you?re gone? I?m in the same boat with my two. Fortunately my ex and I get along fine and if I go away my two will stay at her house and when she travels her three come here. On the off chance she?s not around I hire a niece or nephew to dog sit staying at my place. Just a thought. The dogs seem to be much more comfortable/relaxed in their own environments.

    I don't know anybody that would except for my son. But I hate asking him to leave his family. I know my ex-wife would, and I know she wouldn't take anything, but I know she would ransack through the house looking through everything,she just can't keep her nose out of everybody else's business...

    My dog really would be okay by himself for two days because he does have a doggie door to let himself out, plus I do have an automatic waterer and feeder for him... But I would be worried the whole time if nobody could come check on him...

    I could get my son to come over and check on him a couple of times, but he lives 20 miles away which would be asking too much of him in my opinion. And like I said, in the past I have checked my dog into a dog hotel and he seemed to really enjoy being able to run around with some new friends, they have about a half acre indoor play pen with another half acre outdoor playpen for the dogs, so they get a run around and have a good time.the only time they separate the dogs is at night when it's time for the dogs to go to sleep, or when it's feeding time... Plus they watch and give them their own space if it becomes too much for some of them. Which they say my dog is never needed. But it sure is nice to know that it's there for him if it does become too much to be around a bunch of new dogs... Plus they only charged twenty-five bucks a day

    When we pull down the street to drop him off he gets really really excited. So I know he enjoys it. But it gets really excited when I come pick him up too...

    The outdoor area has grass and shade trees for them, the indoor area has a big rubber mat to cushion their feet... They also have balls and things for them to play with. The lady says when she watches Rebel, he'll grab a ball and throw it with his mouth and the other dogs will fetch it for him and bring it back to him. Then he'll do it all over again[:D]

    I've often thought to just dropping him off once a week just for the day so he can romp around and have a good time, buy me being selfish, I don't want to do it on one of my days off cuz I want to be around him. And they don't open up in the morning till 7, and by that time I'm already to work

    There are some good pet sitters on rover.com. They have reviews, etc too. We had good luck on there.

    Thanks for the heads up, I'll look into it. It's a little late for this trip, I've already made arrangements. But I am also planning on going out of town in May too, that will give me time to find somebody that I like that can give Rebel a more one-on-one experience with them and their four-legged child

    My Son lives 7.5 miles away from me, 15 miles round trip.

    He usually takes two two week Vacation trips a year and calls me when he goes to look after his two Great Danes. My Wife and I have no problem doing it. It's all about trust. It gives him peace of mind knowing that his Dogs and his house will be taken care of.

    I wouldn't think twice about asking him for the same when I take off for awhile and know that he would do the same for me.

    I know my son would do it, and has done it before. But he lives a 40 mile round trip for my house, and it's not working this weekend. Like I said I know he probably do it in a heartbeat, but I hate asking him, but what if he was working this weekend, his jobs only 3 miles away from my house. Especially one and only cost $25 a day to put my dog in a doggy hotel. A my dog seems to really enjoy the camaraderie he gets with the other dogs.

    Like I said, I know my dog will be okay in the doggie hotel and will rather enjoy it. I'm just going to miss him even if it is only for two days...

    Heck just put one of those service animal things on him and fly him with you like all the entitled people do :(

    The only thing that bothers me about having to put our pooch in a doogy hotel is things like Kennel Cough.

    Back when our youngest son was still living at home we took a trip to California one year and we left his dog and cat at the vets.

    About 2 days later the people at the vets office called and said Spike, the dog, would not eat or drink and they were getting worried about him. They said he was just lying there refusing to move. My wife told them to put the cat in with him to see if that helped. A couple of hours later they called back and said he was like a new dog. He was up eating and drinking like nothing had happened. He and the cat were pretty good friends so having someone that he recognized was all it took to get him back back on his feet again.

    That was the first time he had been left overnight any where and evidently he thought he had been abandoned and had just given up on living. We never did that again.

    We couldn't possibly afford to put all our critters in a "hotel" but we have a couple great people to come by, let them out and feed them.
