I couldn't find anything specific about the date of the changes but I did find a few interesting threads about this rifle.

In one of those threads is contact info for gunsmith from Ithaca, although there's no guarantee he's still on this side of the dirt.

I own a 1966 vintage Model 49 Saddle Gun and it has walnut stocks and a dovetailed front sight... I have owned it since Christmas 1966. [:)]

The late Frank de Haas, has a chapter in his book,"Single Shot Rifles and Actions". On the Ithaca Model 49. The book dates to the late 60's.

He states that the stock is Walnut. The front sight is integral with the barrel band. And is made of Zamek, which is a Zinc die casting.

He also states that it was available, in different models at increased cost. These models have figured stock, attached sling, engraving, gold plating etc. Never knew this? As the one I owned years ago, was plain vanilla. Never saw one, with gold plating and fancy wood?
