Japanese Arisaka Type 99 Value?
Can anybody give me an appraisal on this rifle? I inherited this rifle from my stepdad after I joined the national guard. He acquired it in the mid 70's as a landlord for non rental payment from a WWII veteran. I have this and another without the sights and without the mum.

Numbers matching - bayonet with scabbard - monopod - anti aircraft sight wings - early bolt knob - early safety knob - cleaning rod...
What does the chrome lined bore look like???
It needs a professional light cleaning and restoration / rust abatement - bore scrub by someone who knows what they are doing - not over scrubbed or over buffed - retaining sharp edges and markings
Wood needs cleaning and oiling
Off the top of my head without researching kanji characters and arsenal and DOM I would put a base figure of $500.00 on it assuming it cleans up somewhat

I updated the post with a barrel pic0 -
Chrome lined bore looks good - prominent lands and grooves of rifling evident
No dust cover or sling - probability high it's a naval infantry model / see drain holes in stock - no import markings - vet bring back with no paperwork - not duffle cut
Still $500-600 without extensive research and maintenance
Add 10% for arsenal destroyed by nuke dropped on Hiroshima
I like it - I own 4 - I would clean it and shoot it
Reproduction slings and dust covers and cartridge pouches are available
Note cleaning rod should only be a short section not full length
2 piece dovetail joined buttstock intact and no separation

To bad about the rust. You won't actually know how bad the pitting is, until you get the surface rust off.
Use one of the Big Frontier, Nickel, shavings pads. With WD 40, as a solvent. To get the surface rust off. Who knows, it might not be all that bad? The Nickel pad, won't hurt the original finish.
Bought a Limey Victory Model last year. With a original S & W, dipped blued finish. Unfortunately, it had a number of surface rust spots on it. Big Frontier, Nickel pad, got them off. Without messing up the original blued finish.0 -
There are collectors whom are developing an interest in as found intact and unrestored original firearms with a vintage or aged patina assuming function is not impaired or markings obscured - and active progression of degradation is not occurring
Not for me but worth mentioning - my opinion is that it will clean up well and the surface rust is not a deeper creeping invasive active corrosion - but decades of benign neglect in less than optimal storage conditions (must have been dry as witnessed by the condition of the furniture)
The overall complete and near intact facet of the piece can not be discounted when compared to what's available on today's market
Their are several ads running in the last few publications of the firearms news from big player distributors seeking any and all arisaka rifles - and market interest has risen astonishingly in recent years

+1 for clean it up and shoot it. I have a 6.5 bring back from an uncle. I don't shoot it much because its crude, ugly and awkward compared to a Mauser from a different uncle. 0 -
Nice rifle, poor storage. I don't think it will all "clean" up. Some looks bad. Still will bring a good 500 with matching numbers and bayonet. Those monopods sell for 100-150 alone.
I had at one time an extensive collection of those. You can not believe how many changes there are on those.[:0]0
