I Think My Friend Cheated
I?m going to reserve judgement.Some years ago a friend told Me He made His model steam engines from a kit.I said what You have .Isnt That cheating? I ate My words when I saw what He had to do to make what He did from a kit.

My friends brother made me a knife and asked me what i wanted. I am friends with him but we are not close like i am with his brother.
I told him i wanted a knife about 8 inches long with about a 3 1/2 inch blade made out of deer antler.
I got a knife about 12 inches long with a deer handle. It looks so good like it came from a knife company.
After looking online at knife blanks and guards i am about 99% sure that he bought a knife blank and supplied the antler for the handle.
I did not pay anything for the knife because he owed me a favor. I helped him do some things out of the kindness of my heart and he wanted to pay me back.
He made a knife for another friend that looked great. So i told him if it was no trouble i would like one. So he made it.
He went from never making a knife to making beautiful knives in about 3 weeks. LOL Im pretty sure he just put the handle on.
I was thinking about buying a couple knife blanks and shaping the blade like i want.
However i think that is a fraud and cheating. The knife would be just for me though so i think i will build a few for me like i want.
Would you do that or would you learn how to build it from scratch?
I have a friend that does blacksmith full time so he would help me and let me use his forge.0 -

Seems you didn't specify. Were you expecting how the knife you wanted to be made?
"About" is about. If anything you got 8" and then some. If you got a bench grinder get on it to get your "about" 8". If you're worried about temper use 80 grit paper after you take a hack saw to cut the excess.
I am curious what this "deer handle" is.

several companies make knife blanks and kits ...if he did a nice job and it holds an edge ...you win !!! so get an old flat car spring and do it ...let us know in a couple months 0 -

Tommy knows i like the knife. It is a really really nice knife. It looks like it could be from a store good. The whole knife is perfect.
The antler is white tail. I have another friend Tony who has a lot and i mean a lot of antlers. I would say he has well over 200 sets. He supplied the antlers for his knife and mine. He is a taxidermist.
After hunting season he goes walking through the woods looking for fallen off antlers. Plus between him his son and daughter they tag out every year. They never shoot less than an 8 pointer. They all walk the woods every year looking for antlers also.
I am the type if you give me a piece of gum i am thankful. I am thankful for the knife Tommy gave me. I am in the process of looking into making my own knifes.
Im going to talk to Tommy and see if he will show me how to make a knife his way. Even if he only shows me how to put the blank in the handle he has taught me something.
Like someone said i could trim the blade like i want and get the knife shape i want. That is a great idea.
I also have a friend who is a blacksmith named John that does beautiful work. Before i got sick he asked me at least 1 time a month to start learning how to do blacksmith work. Then i was working 80 to 100 or more hours a week and did not have time.
Now i have more time and if i do not feel like going outside that day i do not have to do anything. At least 2 days a week i do not go outside because of how i feel that day.
Worst case if Tommy can not teach me how to make a whole knife he can teach me how to set the tang in the antler and John can teach me how to forge a knife.
I would like to try forging before i buy one because i might not like it and that would be a expensive lesson.
However i am grateful for the knife.0 -

You sound very ungrateful. You called your friend a fraud and a cheat. If I was him I would tell you to piss up a rope.

it's OK ..sometime when everything seems not going well i can bite out sideways too....maybe a do it yerself will help ya thru it easier... besides i never could sharpen a knife rite anyway.... 0
