Anyone reloading with an autodrive?
I am kicking around upgrading to a MK7 auto drive for my Dillon 650.
It is a significant financial commitment but I think i could reduce the time I spend reloading by about 75% per montth, which for me translates into at least an extra hour of sleep per week because the only time I have for reloading is once my kids are in bed.
My needs are 99% 9mm and roughly 2,000 rounds a month. Of course as my boys get older that number may change.
Anyone that can talk me into it or away from the ledge?[:D]

I just wonder how many rejects you will get after they are loaded? As an experienced reloader you can feel what is going on with the press during its movements. You can feel a primer being sticky or even loading sideways. You can feel the cases going into each die, each operation has a feel to it. Bullets seating crooked, or even a taper crimp not feeling right can be corrected.
With a machine running it all bets are off. The 650 is so fast as long as you have some one feeding you bullets and keeping the primer tubes full it seems a machine is good for commercial operations but a bit overkill for the average guy.0 -
Given that you can purchase 9mm ammunition for very cheap prices these days so I am going to ask a few questions...
1) Is your shooting IPSC/3 gun style where complete precision is not a big requirement or are you shooting bullseye and you load for accuracy?
2) If you only require "combat effective" accuracy, have you observed the recent prices on aluminum caused ammunition?
You can likely see my train of thought. It's just that if you dont need umpteen accuracy you could like reduce (not eliminate) your reloading time and supplement your ammo supply with already manufactured aluminum cased ammunition (or cheap brass since you already reload) and the cost might not be mitigated from one of the "super" reloading devices by several years...at which point you can then have your sons sharing the load.[:(]

Fair points- I do have a very high yield on ammo today- the feel usually tells me before something goes too far astray. im quite happy with the 650 as it is dialed in & full disclosure I have a case feeder but haven?t bought a bullet feeder yet ($400) which I believe I would need in order to run the auto drive at peak performance.
While ammo is plentiful and very cheap today, I tune my load for the least recoil while still meeting Power Factor for USPSA. Factory ammo cant come close to how dialed in my ammo is t my gun, but I must admit I havent shot 150 grain Federal Syntec ammo yet- which everyone loves.
I do depend on accuracy- most bonus plates are 6? and typically 20 or 25 yards with my current red dot being 8 MOA I dont have much room for error and a good day with the bonus plates can make or break your day.
Maybe I will call Mark 7 and see if I need a bullet feeder before I dive all in.
I could recoup some cost over time but lets face it, you can buy a truck load of 9mm ammo for 2 grand- and I think i would be closer to $2,500 by the time it has a few accessories.
Still the thought of 1,300 rounds an hour in my garage is pretty sweet!0 -
This guy popped out 450 rounds with his Dylan and a half hour. That translates to 900 per hr.
Where you only load 2000 rounds per month, I just don't see where $2,000 would be worth you throwing into it. All you have to do is go out there 5 time and spend 15 minutes each time to do about the same thing.is $2,000 worth you getting 15 minutes more sleep for only 5 days a month worth it?
It wouldn't be for me, not just for 15 minutes for 5 days in a month cycle
Yes it would be a nice to have a toy to pump out 1300 rounds an hour, but that's exactly what it would be. Just an expensive toy, and not needed, not at the amount that you need to produce...Now at 20 thousand rounds per month...
