One of the mines I inspect is a room and pillar mine, working 48" coal. You will spend your day either lying down or on your knees- there is no place to stand. They are currently doing retreat mining- pulling pillars and letting the roof come down. The working face is 8000 feet inside the mountain.
And that ain't soot, bro- it is high grade metallurgical COAL. Be sure not to get any on your face.

my dad and FIL both along with many other family worked in coal mines
the town I grew up in ( Sidney Oh ) had several cast iron factories Wagner ware was one countless workers looked black at the end of the day especially the fellows that ran grinders they looked like coal miners I am sure many have died off from respiratory issues

uderground coal mining and submarine duty...my choice for the 2 most dangerous jobs....only for the brave...a friend here who has passed did submarine duty ..wish i had talked to him more about it....another once did blasting in mines in Colorado...drilled and set charges

My Dad was a zinc miner in Mascot, TN in the early 50s. We lived in a company house across the road from the commissary (company store). The house circled in red in the picture is the one we lived in.
I would say zinc mining is a lot safer than coal mining. I remember he would come home dusty after work but nothing like the pictures of coal miners.0 -
