This is sorely tempting
Been perusing the local buy-sell-trade for an affordable (cheap) mid size pickup and came across a listing for a 1971 Cougar XR7, for $2000 OBO.
Rear wheel openings and rear of trunk deck show a small amount of rust bleed and the seats need new skins. If it's in good shape the 351 Cleveland he claims is likely worth half the asking price. At least they use to be a hot item for builders.
Reeeally need a pickup to haul stuff, and yes it's second gen but these old cats will never be made again.

Had to google.
Those big slugs. Sure a "hot item" for a pimp build with shag seats, shag headliner, shag everything. Get the ride, slap a trailer hitch and a trailer. But I doubt it'll have enough oomph to tow or stop.
I suppose if you're looking for a "truck" chop everything behind the front seats and turn it into an open cab Ranchero.0 -
I have checked out a couple of vehicles that claimed it had the 351 Cleveland, but were actually the 351 Windsor...
And yes, the 71 cougar came with either one. So make sure it has the Cleveland in it...
I wouldn't say the 351 Windsor was total junk, but compared to the Cleveland it was0 -

Like some said the 71 Cougars were pretty much slugs. If the 351 Cleveland is a Q code Cobra Jet motor, then buy it just for the engine.
You will make twice the money just parting it out.

The first gen cats are sweet but I'm, for some reason, drawn to the 71-73 body style. With the more pronounced hood and sail panels, slug or not, they're sexy.0 -

I sold my 70 Cougar Elimenator when I went in the Army back in 1976 for $500 to my then girlfriends father. That car today, in the shape I sold it in would be a 55-65K value.
The car I really screwed up for selling was a 1968 Shelby GT500KR Mustang I sold to a close friend so I could buy the Cougar. That Shelby was one really quick car, and it was a chick magnet too. You seldom see them sale today for under 100K .

I had a 70 Merc Cyclone. It was a 351 4 speed car. I liked the Cougars too, they were good looking cars but by 71 they were kind of big. The 67-69 was the size and body style I really liked. 0
