I heard one of the truck driver classics on Classic Country today on the Sirius, it is named Freightliner Fever by Dave Dudley. He also wrote the song discussed above, "Six Days on the Road."
In this song, from the seventies, he talks about taking a "West Coast Turnaround." Big black speed pill, guys in North Carolina heading west would pop one of these when they crossed the Mississippi, and keep rolling to California! And Turn Around, and go right back to North Carolina non stop.
That was the seventies, and the days of paper log books. These hopped up truck drivers would keep two log books, if a trooper pulled them over they would show a log book that said they only had been driving for 6 hours, and the cop hopefully would not realize they had been driving for 36 hours. Damn those guys with the West Coast Turnaround were making some money!
So this is why federal regs now require computer log books. The computer does not lie, does not exaggerate, and has no sense of humor. Once you have run your 11 hours in a day, the red flags
start going off on your computer log. So to take a speed pill that keeps you up for 2 days would be counter productive. These days, drivers subsist on 5 Hour Energy, my favorite.
Also coffee. Every Pilot Truck Stop has 4 different kinds of exotic coffee, Jamaica Highland Blend, Hawaii Kona coffee, Brazilian Blend etc. And drivers go in there with giant coffee mugs, thermos jugs that hold 40, maybe 50 ounces of coffee. I see these guys filling 'em up every time I am in a truck stop. Drivers drink massive quantities of coffee these days.
But the days of the little white pills and the West Coast Turnaround are gone.
Come to think of it, how did Jerry Reed stay awake, driving from Atlanta, to Texarkana, and back with all that Coors?

The last few weeks has been crazy, yes I got stuck in that Arctic Wasteland named Wyoming for 3 days! Shut down in Laramie because an XPO driver did a 180? and flopped over a set of doubkes with a hazmat load on. Was supposed to be a few hour shutdown for cleanup, turned out to be 27 hours! Plus they closed 30 and every other way around. Then when they opened the roads it took less than 1 hour for two more trucks to crash on Elk Mountain due to 60+MPH winds and ice, then the storm hit. I only had 4000# in the trailer and should not have been on the road, it was closed to light vehicles, took me 4.5 hours to go 138 miles to Wamsutter, shut down again. Then the next day it took over 5 hours to get to Ft Bridger, they opened the road at 4PM and the roads froze over. Could not keep the truck on the road, so I parked again. Finally the next day I got out and made it to Burns Oregon.
Loaded in Payette Idaho back to Florida, instead of going back through the Arctic Wasteland known as Wyoming I shot south and cut sideways across Utah through the mountains in 2 lane roads hitting the interstate just notth of Albuquerqe. In 3 days I legally made it to Orlando from Brigham City Utah, fast driving and no stopping, hard running.
Then I get stuck just west of Orlando from Saturday till today, the bottom fell out of the rates and nothing moving that was worth going after. Then this morning this load to CA popped up so the next few days I?ll be on I-10 to I-49 to I-20 to I-820 to US-297 to I-40. Have a stop off in New Mexico then 5 drops in CA.

In that thread I posted the address and gave an awsome description of my truck and where it was parked. I all but begged you to come visit and I?m quite sure we could have settled any differences we may have over coffee. BUT, BUT, you totally ignored that and went radio silent for a couple days!! It wasn?t untill you saw an opprotunity to show your ignorance about truck contracts and attempted to smear me and my business because you thought you know trucking contracts but all you did was prove how little you actually know about trucking aside from steering one down the highway!
So Remingtonoaks, the baddest of the bad, badder than Ol Leroy Brown himself, you failed to come talk to me, you hid for a couple days while that thread was ongoing and never even replied to it, from my judgement you made sure I was long gone before posting again. Next, Allen, you need to dig a little deeper if you think ELDs happened because of pills and hardcore trucking. Just like gun control, there is an excuse, a scapegoat and a mountain being formed from a molehill. That was the reason given and if you think that is why we have ELDs then you have bought that propaganda up. You need to do some research on Werner Enterprises, where ELDs all began. Then you need to go further into the ATA, you need to read up on the truth of where this comes from. Then you need to remember this quote,

So yes, if BSM can get thier collective heads out of thier anuses and actually organize this shutdown instead of it being a bunch of knuckledragging neanderthals running thier mouths I will participate in the upcoming events of slowdowns and shutdowns. Something needs to change, trucking needs a King Kong sized enema and a purge.

So no, I won?t be making it to CA right now, still stuck here in Florida. So while I?m staying here at the shipper I ordered dinner from Dominoes since they deliver to the truck, gotta love places like this.
But I can?t complain, I have to keep a smile on my face and pretend I?m not having a bad day/week or someone will complain about me complaining.
