Shed Hunting

Anybody have tips to offer as to trading a dog to find sheds ??? Also are different breeds better than others ???

    I haven't trained a dog for this but have read about people training some of the "versatile" dog breeds to do so. German short hair, pudel pointers, etc. I am sure any breed with a good nose and retriever qualities could be trained for it.

    My dogs bring shed antlers in from the woods every once in a while.

    They are golden retrievers.

    I reckon if the dogs are allowed to chew on sheds they might get motivated to find them out on the walk about.

    Like training bird dogs. Hide the shed, let them find it then reward the pooch and repeat.

    Watch this video, I just googled "how to train a dog to hunt shed antlers" and this was the first one to pop up. I'm sure there are better videos out there if you want to spend the time to look for them

    My man cave basement has shed antlers adorning towel racks and a toilet paper holder in the crapper![:D]

    It has also taken me years to grow this shed over my......never mind[:D]

    Training I've seen involved sort of hiding antlers and then rewarding the dog when it finds one. Gradually, dog equates finding hunk of bone on ground to getting a reward.

    Train the dog for truffles, $150 per oz and higher!!

    They have always used pigs to hunt truffles. [:)] If I had a truffle pig, I would put his name in a web "SOME TERRIFIC PIG" [:D]

    I plan on walking my fence line to look for sheds dropped upon jumping the fence.

    kiss goodnight has it right on. Walking the fence lines seemed to be the most productive for me anyway[;)]

    have found a shed with a large tractor tire...bummer...earlier years i used to walk the creek bottoms north of me in early spring when the cheat was growing and green...the sheds stood out in the growth and were easier to find tho i did find one once by stepping on it and sticking it in my leg
