It's Time for Congressional Term Limits
Since the government shutdown began, we?ve seen plenty of posturing and finger-pointing #150; but not much common-sense. Sadly, this is the new normal in American politics.
At the heart of the problem in Washington is the thriving #150; and anchored in place #150; political class. To put it bluntly, many career politicians put the wishes of the well-connected D.C. establishment ahead of the interests of the people they were elected to serve.
Fortunately, there is a solution: Term Limits.
Term limits will spell the end of politics-as-usual in Washington, help restore a citizen legislature, and encourage public officials to do what?s best for their constituents. Overwhelmingly supported by 82% of Americans, term limits are a solution consistent with the will of the people and the intent of our founders.
The government shutdown, currently in its fifth week, is further proof that term limits are more important now than ever. That is one reason why I have introduced a Constitutional amendment that limits Members of Congress to six terms in the House of Representatives and two in the Senate.
The American people have lost faith in their government. And rightly so. It is well past time to change the status quo in D.C. and turn the ship around. Term limits will do just that. They are a common-sense solution that will break the gridlock, end Washington politics-as-usual, and help restore the citizen legislature our founding fathers envisioned.
It?s time for public officials to start making a difference, not a career.
Sincerely,
George Holding
Member of Congress

IMO Term limits aren't the answer. Limits are already in place. It's up to the voters to institute them. The issue isn't term limits, it's voter education. We can turn the whole house over every 2 years and the senate in 6. 0 -
Washington politicians
Seniority system vs term limits
Their own private healthcare system
Their own private slush fund for paying off sexual assault claims.
Immunity from local laws.
They have their own privileged society (barber, gym, dining, etc.)
Etc.
Etc.
Etc.
They make new laws and protect existing laws.
As mentioned by several posters above, our only effect is to vote the buzzards out, every term. Repeat.0 -

The problem without term limits there's a lot of people that vote for incumbents...
Yes I know that stems from being uneducated about who they're voting for, but you can't force education down somebody's throat...
Unless of course you make it mandatory for everybody to take a class before they vote. But even then, the problem with that is you would have partisan teachers teaching the classes, only giving out the information they want to give...
So the only solution is out with the old and get new that doesn't know enough to be crooked, through term limits0 -
I would sure like to see the proposal of term limits come up on a ballot all across this nation!!
It has been talked about since I was old enough to vote and probably long before. Always just talk. It seems that the best ideas we the people can come up with are just whispered about within groups but never seem to come up on a ballot where these practical solutions would actually reflect the will of the people.
IMHO, the powers that be will not allow their constituants to take control of their clubhouse. They will do everthing they can to keep things status quo where the gravy train flows into their pockets.
It will take what the founding fathers placed into the constitution as a last resort to kick those buzzards off of the dying meat pile which they have turned our country into!0 -
Is this part of the answer?? Yes! Will term limits happen in my lifetime?? Ain't no way in Hell. To get term limits we the people, as a group, would have to get involved. Ain't gonna happen![:(!][xx(][V] 0 -

If Joe Blow gets elected in 'area b' that means there are enough voters in 'area b' that like Joe Blow, to keep electing him over and over regardless of how all others combined vote.
Often the very people that call for term limits will continue to elect the incumbent in THEIR back yard because they think he's a great guy,and should be exempt from their idea. Multiply that theory across the country and you should be able to see why legal term limits are the only real answer.0 -

I see term limits as a feel good attempt to address something we know is wrong without addressing the root cause. I do not think it will change the status quo. We the people are the only answer to the issues. As long as we are stuck arguing over which of the 2 major parties is the least destructive to our nation we lose. Break that and we have a chance to win. Instituting term limits and continuing to elect people from the parties of destruction, will still lead to destruction.
The country took a big step when we elected a candidate for President neither major party wanted. That is what we need to build on.0 -
The voters are stupid Term limits will prevent rich people from spending a million to get a job for life.

Look the "People" elected Marion Barry and Rick Scott, fact is people are stupid and we refuse to allow a test prior to voting so term limits will step in where people are too stupid to oquote:Originally posted by SCOUT5

I agree, I say this all the time when term limits are mentioned in a conversation.
I also remind folks about the consequences of having a good Congressional Rep. that has to be out because of term limits. Do you want that to happen?0 -
Yes because as "good" as he or she or it is I want rotation I don't want career politicians representing me.

What we need is voter limits. Only tax payers and land owners should have the right to vote. 0 -
Now we are making progress.
1. Only land owners, military members and veterans should be allowed to vote. In other words, the citizens willing to invest in their country.
2. Re-institute the poll tax. The voter's input will actually have value. Put the collected money in an investment account that pays a percentage into the treasury. The principle remains untouched and grows.
2. Repeal the 19th Amendment. This country has been in a downward spiral since it was ratified in 1920. I'm sorry, but its true. Ladies, if you want to vote - join the military or buy land.
4. This is a very important point for now: While it is tempting to urge everyone to vote...resist the urge. We do not need more stupid voters! There are too many hotheaded snowflakes voting their emotions.
This will not eliminate all the freeloaders, illegal aliens, dopers, stupid people and voters too lazy to educate themselves, but it will come close.0
