This month's edition carries an article about MACV-SOG and the CAR-15. That was the unit I worked with and the gun we carried in the cockpit with us, just in case. (It would have been futile, but we'd have gone out in a blaze of muzzle blast!) We had the original version, with the shorter barrel and forward assist, not the Air Force version - even though we were AF. But we were so cloak and dagger that we were armed by Army Green Berets, not the AF.

By the time I was "volunteered" for that mission, we were no longer putting US guys on the ground in Cambodia. I worked with indigenous and mercenary teams, but the mission was the same: to put a small team down where they could monitor enemy actions along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, then (hopefully) pick them up again.

The article brings back a lot of memories. Both kinds.

    The owner of the gunshop I grew up in had served in the navy - was a com gear geek - he helped maintain listening post and passive elint gathering equipment in countries adjacent to Vietnam that we had no official presence in during the conflict

    He recalled an old breed gunny who maintained equipment in a small armory - early S&W semiautomatic pistols with silencers - Swedish K sub guns - high standard rimfire semiautomatic pistols with silencers - Marlin lever action rifles in .444 - several .22 rimfire rifles with silencers - browning high powers with no markings - lahti 20mm anti materials rifles - and many other orphans and oddities

    He was issued a select fire M2 carbine and thermite grenades for last ditch defense and destruction of gear

    He never saw any action but he did meet a bunch of spec ops warriors who placed and maintained the spy gear

    I fondly remember those stories
