Rats
I didn't want to further derail Kasey's chipmunk thread so am starting another. I had problems with rats getting into my attic. I hired a company to identify possible places of entry and set traps for any already inside. This seemed to work but eventually they returned. I hired another company who discovered where they were actually getting in (space between dryer vent exit and the brick siding..into the wall and up to the attic). Fortunately they never came inside the living space of the house.
Once they were excluded from the house, they were suddenly all over the back yard and making nests in my rain gutters. There is no source of food or water available to them & trash is kept in a tightly closed container, so I don't know why they came.
I bought several of the plastic snap jaw traps and placed them around the fenced back yard and near the house. I also put out poison. Within 1/2 hour of placing a trap under a gutter downspout I caught one. I dumped him, reset the trap and caught another 15 minutes later. Over the course of a week I caught more than a dozen. A lot of poison chunks disappeared too, so who knows how many chowed down in nests somewhere. I saw one big! rat crawling away with my trap one evening so I pulled up my home security sign and impaled him, staking him to the ground for later disposal. Normally I wouldn't harm a fly but with rats all bets are off. We seem to be rat free now. (knock wood).

I had an industrious vermin (attic rat?) in my attic. A glue trap set near the nest on the soffit got him. I put poison up there to make sure. So far, so good. They were climbing up the vinyl corner piece into the attic from there. 0 -
Wish there were 100's of rats breeding their little hearts out around my chicken coops so I could have some target practice. Had maybe 15+ around but a .177 break barrel made quick work of them.
For 100's of rats you definitely need a Scoped PCP with night vision.

Neutra are a pest especially on rice fields, they'd be good target practice. PLUS there is a $5.00 bounty (unlike attic rats[:D]}
Participants are paid $5 per nutria taken through the program from Nov. 20 through March 31 every year, and there is no fee to join.

It's paid for by the government so maybe there is a "sister" breeding program to assure plenty of money is spent.0 -
After moving in I found the little farm house we lived in from June '08 to July '10 was infested with packrats. The two hole outhouse had a nest must'a been three feet deep on the seats. Two gallons of ammonia and a shotgun with spreader loads of 12 shot took care of that bunch. The old boxcar and outbuildings were also loaded with them. In the first two weeks there I killed 73 of the little bastages. 0
