A couple weeks I didn't have too much sympathy, but once they get to the third and fourth missed pay check I have sympathy for them. I've lost most my hope that this country is going to survive it's direction anyways. This country is not going to be saved as a capitalist republic at the ballot box. 0 -

People need to save their money. It's not my fault that they live above their means, so it won't bother me a bit if they go hungry. You are supposed to have 3 months living expenses saved up if you're not living above your means... besides that, they're not going to go without a paycheck completely, they'll just get it when the shut down ends.... And I'll bet you a dollar against the donut, they'll take that windfall and spend it all on frivolous luxuries instead of saving it for the next shut down... 0 -

I am good for the duration, but am seeing some really sad situations shaping up among my Coast Guard brothers and sisters. It?s tough for an E-4/E-5 with a wife and couple of kids to put much away for a rainy day. Couple that with coastal cities with ridiculous rent prices, and these folks aren?t going to last long. Unlike furloughed civilians, they are bound to continue serving and can?t go get side jobs to make it through. It?s a national disgrace. [xx(] 0 -

During my wife's 43 year career in Social Security, she went through several shutdowns. She was told they were eligible to file for unemployment through the duration of the shutdown.
She never did, but I wonder if that policy is still valid.0 -

Not effecting me. The furloughed employees can get everything that an illegal can get, they just have to put forth the effort to acquire.
When my job, work slowed down, we would get layoff then I was prepared to either wait it out and return to the current employer or find a new gig. No way I could live payday to payday. But then I would have a backup job, auto repair, cut wood, something.
In construction, feast or famine, but you better have a backup plan.
To see someone loose their job and then freeze up and panic and not know what to do next, well lets say it has never happened to them very much.
On this situation when five billion is involved, and a cock stretching to see who will shrivel first, is just silly. I would say that every gov employee within walking distance of polosis house should camp out on her street. The crazy, silly things this country spends money on, and for a minimum cost for some NATIONAL SECURITY on the open southern border, well is absolutely treasonous to oversee any longer.
The emigration process is very simple and abused anyway as promulgated. If you can not enter legally, or leave just the same, then do not be surprised if something does not go as planned.0 -

Not directly but prior to the shutdown my daughter took a job with a company that subs through the State department and I greatly worry that while they have been carrying her for the time being if this extends longer they may have to let her go.
She is newly divorced and trying to get a fresh start so that would be devastating to her morale and finances.
Wife and I are blessed to have no debt and decent resources she won't go hungry or homeless but it wouldn't be a good thing.

The only "folks" who are going to run out of food are those who live on government programs. You can be assured that Congress won't allow any of "those folks" to go hungry. Certain USDA programs were still getting money throughout the shutdown.
The shutdown is affecting me directly because my primary agency has begun cancelling projects. Some of those higher up the ladder have been on furlough for weeks which I'm sure is causing financial problems for them. In addition, USDA/FSA has been closed but has now re-opened with an immense back-up of work to be completed before planting season. For those offices already understaffed, this means they'll never catch up. My job with that agency is operational but nothing to do this time of year so no work.0 -

Very doubtful. When the budget is approved, all those agencies who've been marking time will jump into the backlog using more time and money to clear things out which will cost MORE money in the long term.0 -
