locker at lgs/range?
So in another thread, this was posted as part of a larger comment (sorry for snipping mrmike but I wanted to focus on the one part of your comment)

But actually... I've been curious. My local range has a pro-shop attached, and space. Finances and logistics aside, would it be legal to install a bunch of low-end safes/lockers and rent them out to members? Access controlled door to storage area, access controlled individual locker spaces.
As a customer and member, I'd be on it if it were reasonably priced.
But would the guns need to be logged in on the shops books, a 4473 completed should I decide to take one home, etc? Assume customer supplied lock - padlock or combo. If I were to rent one, could I give my buddy (not a prohibited person etc) a copy of the key or the combo? Would I have to give the shop access?
If state law matters as well as federal, I'm in Florida, but I'm more interested in Federal in general.
As far as shadiness, I think this is what is required in some european countries, and if it were a *required* thing for gun ownership, definitely against. But there are times that I'm 5 minutes away from my local range and have an hour to kill but no gun with me. And I don't wanna pay $20 rental plus their ammo, etc. when I already own most of what I'd want to shoot. If price were reasonable I'd probably get yet another 10/22 and a Mk II/III/IV to Buckmark to just keep there "on spec" ...

In Denmark you are required to belong to a club for a year and properly trained - and must keep the gun secured in your home under lock and key (legislated specifics) and the police may enter and ask to inspect the gun and it's storage at any time - random and scheduled periodically...
Having off books lockers as I referenced led to illegal destructive devices and class III items being hidden from plain sight
Outside the home and off books means outside of a warrants purview and scope in most cases
Individuals who were legally prohibited from owning guns took advantage - and others were able to keep and possess items they were not allowed to have outside the confines of the BATFE code and the gun control act
I suspect that for these reasons such behavior is prohibited but I could be completely wrong - it's happens frequently
I simply see it fraught with peril and a veritable Pandora's box
