Small Engine Backfire

I have a Toro rider with a 17.5 HP OHV Briggs engine that runs fine but a few seconds after the engine is turned off it backfire very loud.Any ideas on the fix?

    leaking a little extra fuel into the exhaust after you shut the engine off, ignited by any remaining hot spot anywhere from the combustion chamber to the muffler. really dont kn ow of a simple fix but it wont hurt anything. usually goes away with time.

    has it got a screw adjust on the fuel mix...lean <<<>>> rich or just idle it down and run for a cool down

    All the above, plus it could be that you have a bunch of carbon on your exhaust valve and is partially stuck open that is allowing unburnt gas going into your exhaust. Run a couple tanks full of Chevron techron gas additive mixed in with your gas through it to see if that helps. You can get Chevron techron at any parts store. I have seen that happen more times than not to cause a backfire after you shut it off

    Don't shut it down right after you've been running the blade/PTO. Give the engine a min to cool a bit.

    twist the air valve on the fuel cap before shutting it down. Then gas will have a neg pressure and not drip

    Don?t forget to open it up when you crank it up next

    Agree, let it cool for a minute or so. Just the same as letting it warm up for a minute to let everything get going..
