Perhaps Someone Can Explain to Me.....
Why is there such a negative attitude on this board toward government workers? I have to say, I am pretty surprised at some of the ugly comments I have seen over the past few weeks. What?s the deal? Angry at Congress, the President, etc.? I get that. But why so vicious towards the workers? They?re fellow Americans, just like you.

I used to be a city worker, I'm retired now with 3 part time jobs and I could care less what people thought about me when I was working for the city of Kilwaukee. 0 -
i work for the county Board of Education, driving a school bus. I get about 2-1/2 months off in the summer. I prepare for those months, financially. 0 -
I believe most people feel that the federal government is bloated with excess people doing duplicated jobs. I have read stories about how government employees spend a lot of job time surfing porn. 0 -

Yep. Govt is bloated....but that?s not the fault of the workers. They?re just doing a job that?s been made available.
As far as the other stuff, there are good and bad workers just like any industry......just a cross-section of America. Same stuff could be said of workers in any profession, I would guess.0 -
The only difference in welfare recipients and government workers is the government workers have to come to the workplace once in a while to to get their pay check.
The company I worked for before I retired did contract work for the government and if you've ever sat in a meeting with GSA reps you would know what I mean. I've seen 5 out of 6 GSA people in a meeting that were on their IPhone (It was actually BlackBerry's) the entire meeting and didn't have a clue what the meeting was about. The hardest work they do is figuring out how much sick and vacation leave they have left.0 -
I think that the biggest difference is whether or not the public workers are union or non-union. I guess that I'm what Smitty500 would call a welfare recipient since I work for a public utility, except for the fact that if I got caught screwing off I'd be fired on the spot since I don't have any union protection. I agree that there are quite a few public workers that deserve the reputation/opinion of S500, however, that's the same tactics that the dems are doing by labeling all of us as racists, homophobes...etc. 0 -
I'd venture a guess that a large part of that negative attitude comes from some of the government workers claiming to be destitute within a few days of being furloughed, and immediately expecting handouts. Whose fault is that for not planning better for the future? I would venture another guess in that, having no idea how long the shutdown will last, very few have actually looked for other work. 0 -
I don't hate all government workers. Just the non-essential ones. I have quit jobs before because I found out I was there just for looks. They can do the same, and if they don't their bums...
On top of that, there's been other shutdowns. This ain't their first rodeo, and they haven't saved for it? It's their own fault. And I don't have any tears to shed for people that make their own beds

Agree 100%. Life happens, what if their vehicle needed a $3000 transmission, or their children needed something that was not covered by their insurance? Everyone needs to have some emergency savings in case something goes sideways..0 -
I believe the attitude against govt employees was gained by their own work habits and the way they treat many citizens when they have an interaction with them in govt.
When govt employees get pay and benefits I can only dream of it is hard to have sympathy for them.
When I have to deal with a govt employee if they showed that they took a genuine interest in my problem and solving it then they might be due some sympathy.0 -

Most of the time, when you need to deal with them they get pissed off merely because you are interrupting them and making them do what they get are supposed to get paid for.
Corpulence, laziness, and overall bad attitudes appear to be prerequisites for government employment....and even worse they have labor unions protecting them from getting fired thus reinforcing the aforementioned traits.0 -
Waste fraud laziness abound. I have personally interacted with many Government workers who are useless and were hired in many cases to appease quota systems 0 -
Because by and large nobody is responsible for their acts, non acts and misdeeds. Being unaccountable is the entire process they operate under.
The FAA has been hearing from us since June of 2016 about the abuses at our airport. The lady handling these matters assured me she would get it handled by her retirement date of 01-20-2019.
Nothing has happened, the lady is retired, the abuses of over $3,000,000.00 of your tax dollars continues unabated. Our Congresscritter, a fellow pilot, is as useless as teats on a boar hog when it comes to actually doing ANYTHING of value.
The governments do not call center is another fine example. The scammers use it knowing the numbers are good! What happens to the scammers, not a darn thing.0 -
ya gotta grasp the truth that 40% of AMERICANS cannot deal with a $400 emergency...havin made NO effort to budget and save...now these fuloughed workers will get paid when this is over ...disgusting to see news yesterday of lines of the fat temporarily vacationed in long lines for FREE FOOD...WHINING about how BAD it is ..i have been out of a job before and i made do till i got another..WITH NO welfare, food stamps or any of the assistance programs ...NONE EVER....i would wager ALL of these have a home, vehicle, big TV, cell phone, etc etc and now NOT A ONE has pawned anything ????? 0 -

People nowadays are not used to "going without" and have had it well enough that they don't prep for times when they have to provide for themselves.
My ex is a furloughed fed. Lowly GS rating. She and her husband are still putting food on the table and making sure the important bills are paid. They've thanked and refused several of my "need a loan till this is over" offers.0 -

I worked for a industrial HVAC maintaince company and we sometime did government work.We took pride in our work and always did a good job. .When we did government jobs,I would always request that a government worker check and behind us to be sure the work was satisfactory.99% of the time no one would check or even care if the jobs were done.Every so often one of the government workers would want to come to work with us because the pay was better.None of them stayed very long.When they found out you must be at work early,work hard for long hours ,they went back to their last job.I am sure there are hard working,responsible government workers,but not the ones I had experience with. 0 -
Don't forget about Jealousy.
If people were honest, some would admit that they hate government workers because the job they have isn't as good as the government workers job. Or the pay and benefits aren't.
In my opinion, the media is very good at keeping this fire burning!
But in the end, they are just people like everybody else. You will find good and bad in any job classification.
And if you suck at your job and the boss never addresses it? We'll then he/she is certainly to blame too. Although with government jobs, maybe it can be harder to get rid of the bad employee.
I've worked for governments and private industry and the #2 biggest difference, was the quality of management. With many bosses on the government side, you can't help but ask yourself 'how does this guy even have a job, much less one that makes twice what I do?'.
With private industry, if you aren't a very good manager, then you aren't a manager very long - at least from what I've seen.
And the #1 biggest difference is Profit. In private industry, it has to happen, or else.
With government jobs, that whole 'spend money like a drunken sailor' is a very real thing. My Federal job was in manufacturing and we were forbidden to make a profit, because after all everything we made was being 'sold' to 'another version of' ourselves. I think the goal was break even +/- 5% or so. Yes, we were overstaffed - but at least by good people who came to work & did their jobs (of course this was in a conservative portion of the midwest - results may vary).
But again, most all of this stuff is way beyond the average workers control - so how can you hate them for it?0 -

The vast majority of those workers have voted for the people that have put them out of work, namely, Democrats. 0
