Newbie Yahoos On The Auctions: FFL Question
Question mainly for FFL sellers:
Have you noticed new buyers, NR, but with a "do it for me" attitude?
"I'll send payment, but I'll leave it up to you to contact my FFL for a copy of his license. His name is Joe Jones and he has a shop in Castle Rock, Maine."
The way it has been working in the past, and the way I think it should still work, is that it's the buyer's responsibility to secure the FFL copy, or to have the FFL send me a copy.
Another had the FFL send me a copy, and then he stopped communicating. No payment, no excuse, no nothing.
Another, one I already mentioned, was in California, and he bid on and won a pistol that can't be shipped into California. He did the same with a few other sellers until his account was terminated.
Am I right? Have any of you experienced buyers like this?
Is it the entitlement mentality? Has it invaded the gun culture?

This is a NR noob telling me, "That's not how it works." LOL!

(So, I am supposed to chase down HIS transfer dealer???)
My response:
"You?re new on GunBroker. I?ve been here since 1999. I think I know how things are done better than you. Have your FFL send me a copy at gpd035@sbcglobal.net and we can proceed.

I really don't care either way. If someone wants me to go the extra step, and they are polite about it, I don't mind. Why should I?
Especially if they are noobs, I want to encourage them. It only takes a minute, so I'll do it. I've had lots of NR bidders. It always makes me feel good to give them their first A+ on GunBroker feedback.
Neither he nor I are "entitled". We should both be courteous. It takes two to make a sale.0 -

My responsibility to get the Copy to you, not yours to get it. I can e-mail a copy to you upon check out. In some cases I have had to have him e-mail or even snail mail a copy.

I bought an item from a new seller and the item did not list shipping. The listing said "Buyer pay actual shipping"
I had to go thru GB checkout to pay. GB checkout tells me "Total not available at this time" "Await response from seller" GB obviously sent email to seller to provide total with shipping and get back with me.
Well GB did send email to seller, which seller later mentioned he ignored. Tried to contact seller in the meanwhile which was unsuccessful.
I finally hear from seller asking why he has not been paid. This was 20 days later. Seller tells me he expected MO & FFL in the mail. Also mentioned after the sale communication is not needed. Seller then swears he did not set up sale for GB checkout, but later admits he probably did so by accident.
Moral of the story is it is not just the buyers, but sellers too have the same "Do it for me attitude"
I don't know about the rest of you, but there should always be some kind of contact after the sale. Been a GBer since 02 and the first time something like this had happened.0 -

When I buy from a seller on GB that requires a FFL I do the following:
1) Go to my transfer FFL and get a copy of his license for the transfer. In his presence I write the following on the licence:
FILE COPY
TO BE USED FOR GunBroker AUCTION #123456789 ONLY
2) Take said licence to the Post Office and purchase a Postal Money Order for the amount to be paid. On the USPOMO I write the GB auction number.
3) Purchase a USPS Priority Mail envelope with tracking and put the above items into it along with a printout of the completed auction. This way there is no question as to which item I am to receive.
4) Once I get home I send the shipper an email with the tracking information and a description of everything in the envelope.
This has worked well for me in the past.
NOTE: When I first started using this transfer dealer he was reluctant to have me walk out of his shop with the license. What I did was purchase the USPO stuff first, take it to his shop and let him mail the package from there. After a while he would let me take them out.0 -

I did note my listings had checkout available and I too never signed up for it and have no way to accepting it that I am aware of.0 -
It's really not that hard. I win an auction, I make payment and I send a copy of the auction to my FFL with the contact info of the selling FFL..he takes care of the rest. 0 -

I tend to find it is sellers that don't bother with feedback. I figure they need it more than I do, with 200+ A+. So if they don't leave it, neither do I.0 -
anytime i've bought from auction I print winning email, copy of teh auction listing, get a USPS MO and a stamped envelope, go to my FFL, have him add a copy of his license, seal it, and ask for him to drop it in his outgoing mail.
Any time I've sold I've asked for the numbers needed to run a EZ Check, and called the FFL and confirmed I am a non-licensee and would include a xerox of my drivers license. The few I've dealt with seemed to be happy with that.
In short, I try to make it as easy as possible on the 2 licensees stuck in the middle of my transaction.0 -
I remember when I was an NR. I won my 1st auction from Reds Tradingpost. I read their instructions and emailed them to make sure I did it right.
I then mailed a Copy of my dealers FFL and a Certified Bank Check to them.
If your dealer will not give you a copy of their FFL marked "For Transfer only to Your Name" You might want to deal with someone else.
No Problems.................90+ Transactions later I am still doing it that way.
PS I always write a short letter reminding them of what the auction was for and I put the auction number on everything.0
