Gum for firewood ??

About 2 years back I cut several gum trees,,they were very tall but only 10-12 round so small,, Now I was just wondering since they are good seasoned and no need to split how they would burn for firewood

    Getting ready to take down a large sweet gum and beech tree. Sweet gum burns but not as hot as oak. Get a hydraulic splitter..it is stringy. Beech splits just looking at it.

    Pain to split. Heat value about the same as Red Fir or Pine- without the creosote of those woods. Burns quickly. 20.6 million BTU/ cord. Would not seek it out, would burn it if I had it.

    Its not worth messing with IMO. I burn it outside with oak limbs to generate heat in the fire pit,

    I will stack mine in 3' lengths for folks to pick up next to the road with sign.. free wood.

    I think if you put a piece of black gum in your stove, it will put the fire out.

    Like others said, it burns, but not the best btu output compared to other wood. It dries out very light and burns quickly. I use it during the day and pack the stove with oak and hickory for overnight.

    I have a bunch on my property and use it if I need to clear an area of trees, but try to focus on oak and hickory as the main source for firewood.

    Burn it if you got it.[:D]

    Yep
    It burns great and IMHO longer than oak. Spot on with hyd splitter.
    What I really like is a large thick cut makes the best night block ever.

    Seasoned sweet gum burns all right, but leaves a lot of ashes. It is not near as good a red oak.

    I burned it the past two winters as it's all I had access to. It burns plenty warm for the house but fast.

    If it's free, go for it (which per your OP I'm assuming it is).

    If you have to pay for it I wouldn't.

    I like Juicy Fruit gum did they smell like that when burning?[:)]

    It is not clear to me if they are talking about sweet gum or black gum. According to my friends who should know it is not a good idea to split black gum, just cut it. It is cheap and light.
