I asked a similar question a few weeks back and I believe the answer to your first question is because AR-15 is a Colt trademarked name so no other manufactures can use the AR-15 name on there receivers. If I'm wrong someone please correct me.

You'll have to wait for someone else to answer the other 2 questions.

There are some other pre-ban's on the auction side, a couple Olympic Arms, a PW(Pac West Arms) or two, and a couple Eagle Arms. I have a few of the Eagle Arms, as they all had the A2 style lower reciever you are talking about. They all had the push-pins for takedown, in front, and back, where as the Colt, mostly, does not have a front push pin. The Colts are the most collectable, and will hold their value, if all the original equipment is kept, so it can be put back to original configuration. Just keep looking, as there are Bushmaster's, Olympic Arms, PWA, Colt, and Eagle Arms. The Eagle Arms, were IMHO, the highest quality of them all, including Colt.

One of the best ways out of this whole deal, is to buy a pre-ban lower reciever, as that is what determins if it is preban or not, then put the A3 upper on as you wish, as that is exactly what I have done also. I have no desire for the carry handle, detachable, or not.

There are several pre-ban magazines out there too, but the good ones say LaBelle on them, on the bottom.

If you wish to get more information, from a fellow NY'er, and previous FFL holder, e-mail me, and we can go from there.

What, exactly are the NY requirements? Earlier Colts come in either A1 or A2 version with carry handles and very few were A3 flattops. I may need corrected on this since I don't follow the prancing pony fetish.
Get yourself a number stamp set and put your choice of date on the mags.
Do you want an "AR" rifle or an AR "type" rifle?
