I think this not something I would put on an open forum.

I'm not sure who you're trying to bait.. Since you and your "dealer" conspired to assemble an illegal combination of gun and high capacity magazines, I hope you both see jail time.. We have enough hurdles to clear, here in Kali, without jerks skirting the law..

Well, I don't know, it may be like the distinction between "tax evasion" & "tax avoidance". (Tax avoidance is completely legal.)

I don't see where Lefty did anything wrong; based on his post, it sounds like the whole thing was the dealer's idea. If his dealer believes that this transaction was completely legal, I'm sure that he has written documentation from the CA Attorney General. No dealer would be stupid enough to deliberately violate a state law that could cause him to lose his business (& his freedom).

Maybe we should thank Lefty, since he went to all the trouble of registering for this forum just to share this news with us. If he really wants to help our CA shooters, he will post the name & address of his gunshop. Since this is obviously legal, why would he not do so?

I am not a laywer, but if I understand the CA law correctly, you cannot transfer, loan, borrow, buy, sell, or import preban magazines. If you had a preban magazine, you can keep it. If you have a preban that breaks, you can order parts to repair it.

I would be very cautious having a postban gun, no record of owning a preban gun, and having repaired preban magazines.

Uh, I think that your dealer will be visited by DOJ people sooner or later, and all of his sales lists will be going with them. I'd keep them 10 rounders right at 10 rounds if I were you. 'Specially if you put your "new" Gen-4 Glock (Made AFTER the hi-cap ban) on your CCW, and get in a shooting with the "new" 15 round mags in place.

But to each his own.... [?]

I recently purchased, from a California gunshop...a new, Glock 19 Gen4 w/3-15rd mags. Sounds crazy right? This dealer goes through a procees of installing a single shot bbl and getting it registered to you...legally. You do a little 'dance' in and out of the store door when you pick it up. He (the dealer) then handed me a bag of magazine parts stating 'These are your preban, repaired with modern parts kits, magazines.' So, I take the bag home and put em together, and there ya go. Legal he says...legal I hope! I also put this weapon on my very legal CCW. What do you guys think about all this?

I think you should tell the rest of us CA residents the name and location of this fine gun store .....[:)]

    On 2nd thought, don't.

Single shot exemption of non-roster handguns is legal. Some store decline to do it, but it is legal. Disassembled magazine "kits" are legal in CA for repair of legally owned +10 capacity magazines. Assembling those magazine kits into new +10 capacity magazines is illegal and a felony in CA.

    http://www.hoffmang.com/firearms/DOJ-large-cap-magazines-2005-11-10.pdf

So, the CA FFL dealer violated CA law by importing +10 round capacity magazines and you violated CA law by assembling them. Since CA requires a transaction number when a gun is mailed into the state (and considering that Exeter and Visalia and such aren't exactly the most populous parts of the state) and a DROS when sold, how difficult (if this little tale is true) do you think it would be for CA DOJ to figure out who did the deal?

So the FFL made two mistakes - first, doing the deal and second, doing it with someone who would tell the world.

BTW,I think the law is asinine and have lots of (legally owned) +10 round magazines.

There are some outfits avoiding California repression by selling "single shot" pistols. The bits to bring them back to 49 state normal operation are not expensive. This seems to be a legal loophole at present.

But I would be wary of any scheme to get full capacity magazines into that jurisdiction.

the single shot exemption is one thing, and likely legal(im not an expert on cali law, but im reasonably sure this part is above board).

the magazine bit is a whole different matter.

in any event, i wouldnt be advertising grey area gun deals to the world. for all you know, any one of us is a california official of whatever type would be in a position to act on this info...

Thanks Neal for your input...you seem to be one of the few with some insight. Most of the responses I got sounds like there's a lot of scared, non-believers out there. Let me expand a bit: I'm 60 years old, been a shooter all my life...belong to a local gunclub...NRA member..train regularly...been carrying a CCW for 30 years...I'm certainly not looking for trouble! But what I do look for are gundealers that are on top of their game and know the legal 'loopholes' of the law. Consider this: The gunshop I deal with is one of two in different Ca. cities. When you go into this shop it's like a barber shop; take a number and wait your turn. I'M NOT THEIR ONLY CUSTOMER! God knows how many 15rd Glocks they've sold....and I'm damn glad everyone's jumping on it! Bottom line is...if they were doing anything illegal, don't you think they'd be out of business by now? You guys think harder and send somemore thoughts. Thanks.

You don't have to carry a proof of purchase receipt from preban days. All you do is state that these are 'rebuilt mags from a legal repair kit'. There is no law that says you have to prove you owned them pre 2000.
