1899 Savage help
I have a gun that belonged to a great uncle that has become mine and I am a little lost. It is a 250-3000 take down sn# 2041xx. Dates to 1918 to 1919, it has a .410 barrel with it but the name on it is Krieger? I have not been able to find anything about this. The sn#s match on the stock, forend and frame. The 1 owner did mount scope bases but no sling. This gun looks too nice to be this old? If any one can help please let me know.

Something is out of whack here? Krieger is a famous barrel maker of the modern era, (last 40 years?).
Either there were 2 barrel makers named Krieger? Or you shotgun barrel was made fairly recently. Never heard that the Krieger who is in business now ever made shotgun barrels. He is noted for high precision, expensive rifle barrels.
Contact him by phone or e-mail, to see if he can shed some light on the history of your barrel.0 -
Yes I see that, I 1st saw this gun in the early 70's with the .410 so it seem to predate the current Krieger Mrg. I did send an e mail hoping to find more out. So back to my dilemma, are there any 1899,99 experts out there? 0 -
I have only seen maybe 5 99's with a 410 aux bbl. None were with a 250 Sav. Have you shot the rifle/shotgun? Could you post some Pic's, I cannot be the only person that would like to see it.
Other options: Bubba has a stamp set, in the last 100 years perhaps John Doe Krieger owned the gun. There might have been another gunsmith Krieger that did the work. I found that out doing a project on a Gibbs rifle.

The Blue Book of Gun Values Model 99F Featherweight - similar to pre-war 99E, except takedown and 1/2 pound lighter, also mfg. with .410 bore shotgun bbl. Mfg. 1920-40 add 50% for 410 bore shotgun.
The ones I remember were on the 303 Sav and maybe a 30-30.0 -
This is a mdl 1899, I have this gun at a local gun smith to try and find more out about it. I will post some photos when I get it back. I do plan on hunting with it this year but will take off the old Herters scope and put on a modern one. This reciever has been tapped and a replacement butt plate installed. So Even though this gun shows in great condition it is just a 94 year old shooter with an interisting history I bet. There is a chance that Krieger is like you said just a Bubba with a stamp kit as it is done as single stamps and not a roll stamp. I was told a take down case was some where for this gun and I have them looking for it. Any one have an idea what this gun may bring? 0 -
It couldn't be Kreighoff, could it? 0 -
A .410 barrel was a regular catalog option for Savage 99s in those days. I don't know what the Krieger mark represents but doubt it has anything to do with the present barrel maker. 0 -
Spoke to the Smith today, and he is also lost on the Krieger .410 barrel. The lever is not case colored so I think this gun may of been a victim of a re-blue in its past life unless there was such a thing as a non case colored lever produced in 1918/19 (light weight)? If so why was the 2 barrels not re-blued at the same time? Too many questions and no living soul to ask. 0 -
You may indeed never know the answers to these interesting questions. You are correct it has shooter value only, but that may be decent value because 1899/99s are estemed 'old time' shooters as well as collectables. In my region (and values can vary considerably in different parts of the country) that rifle might (depending upon other condition factors and who was looking that day) ask $600 and would likely fetch $400-$450. You won't get rich selling it, but it should make a fine old rifle to hunt with. I would leave the Herter's scope if it works. My .250-3000 wears an old Weaver in a Stith mount as it might have in the mid 20th. 0 -
I have 3 99's and 6 barrels,one bbl.is a 410.it fits all 3 my 99's that are 303sav. and 2 300sav.all are takedowns.other bbls. are 30-30,and 22HP.
The 303,30-30,22Hp are head spaced on the rim same as the 410 And have fired the 410 on them actions in takedown,I have not fired the 410 on the 300 sav.as it is not head spaced on rim.
I have a ad from the 30's that lists 300 sav. and 410 in box with cleaning kit.my uncle said the kits were for stockholders of savage and 410 bbl's were given to dealers for so many 99's sold.on back side of ad it lists fatima cigarettes .25 a pack.
I had to make a forend for the 410 as all my takedown forends were 1/2 in.short.bought a blank savage years ago and fitted.tks hedge[:D]0
